Optimally illuminate carport with LED light – install camera and motion detector
The carport was finally finished. The roof was tight and the protective coating was also applied several times. Now I could devote myself to the electrics.
In addition to lighting that had to be activated by a motion detector but also had to be switchable for continuous operation, at least 2 sockets also had to be accommodated in the carport.
Of course, I also need the right cables and connections to be able to connect the amplifier’s speakers in the basement. After all, the carport should also serve as a shelter for celebrations in bad weather.
Finally, of course, one of my surveillance cameras should also be installed on the carport. As I use PoE technology for the connection, I only needed a network cable and no additional power supply.
PoE network for the camera on the carport
For the expansion of my home surveillance system at the carport, I also opted for a surveillance camera with Power over Ethernet (PoE).
This standard enables the camera to be powered directly via the Ethernet cable, eliminating the need for an additional power cable.

Advantages of PoE technology
Technical specifications: PoE supports up to approximately 100 meters of cable run without power loss, which is sufficient for most domestic applications.
This technology is able to automatically detect and supply the required amount of electricity, which increases safety and reduces the risk of electrical overloads. Thanks to this capability, PoE is particularly reliable and user-friendly.
Installation and maintenance: PoE simplifies installation as only one cable needs to be laid to ensure both data transmission and power supply.
This reduces the effort and cost of additional power cables and makes maintenance easier, as there are fewer cables and connections that could potentially fail.
Flexibility and scalability: With PoE, I can position my surveillance cameras flexibly as no power sockets are required nearby. This allows greater freedom in the design of my monitoring system and facilitates future expansions.
Disadvantages of PoE technology
Initial costs: The use of PoE entails higher initial costs, as PoE-capable network devices and cameras are generally more expensive than non-PoE-capable models.
These higher costs can be a hurdle, especially if you are planning a larger monitoring system.
Network infrastructure: The installation of a PoE system may require an upgrade of the existing network infrastructure. A special PoE switch may be necessary, especially if several cameras are to be supported.
This can mean additional financial and technical expenditure.
Despite these disadvantages, the advantage of simplified installation and maintenance outweighed the disadvantages for me, which ultimately justified the decision to use a PoE camera to monitor my carport.

PoE is an efficient and practical solution for home surveillance systems that offers simplified installation and increased flexibility, despite the higher initial costs and possible infrastructure upgrades.
To power my surveillance camera, I laid a Cat7 network cable through the empty conduits in the floor to the camera’s junction box. The camera could then be connected without any problems.
The sealed junction box also protects the network connection from unauthorized access.

LED light on the carport – what needs to be considered?
LED strip lights, also known as LED strips, are a popular choice for lighting in sheltered outdoor areas, such as under my carport roof.
These flexible lighting solutions offer a number of advantages, but also have some disadvantages that can be minimized with the right measures.
Advantages of LED strip lighting in outdoor areas
- Energy efficiency: LED strip lights are known for their high energy efficiency. They consume significantly less electricity than traditional lighting methods, which leads to a considerable reduction in energy costs.
- Long service life: LEDs have a significantly longer service life compared to conventional incandescent or halogen lamps. This reduces the need for frequent replacement purchases and lowers maintenance costs.
- Flexibility in installation: Thanks to their flexibility, LED strip lights are easy to install and can be shaped into many forms, making them ideal for customized lighting solutions.
- Low heat generation: LEDs generate very little heat during operation, which minimizes the risk of heat damage or fire hazards.
- Robustness and weather resistance: LED light strips that are specially designed for outdoor use, such as those with an IP65 protection rating, are protected against dust and water jets, making them ideal for use in conditions such as under a carport roof.
Disadvantages of LED strip lights in outdoor areas
- Initial cost: The initial cost of high quality LED strip lighting can be higher than other lighting options.
- Light quality and diffusion: In some cases, LEDs can have an uneven light distribution or emit a less warm light color, which is not ideal for every environment.
- Sensitivity to temperature fluctuations: Despite their robustness, extreme temperatures can shorten the service life of LEDs.
Reduction of disadvantages
- Cost-benefit analysis: A detailed cost-benefit analysis can help to weigh up the long-term savings from lower energy costs against the higher purchase costs.

Laying cables safely on the carport
When I built the carport, I laid empty conduits in the ground, through which I later pulled the cables for electricity and network.
The lighting in the carport is provided by an LED light strip, which generates uniform and indirect light. This strip light has a low power consumption of just 5 watts, which means I don’t have to worry about high running costs.
The lighting can be controlled either via a motion detector or via a changeover switch in the carport. This is particularly practical if the carport is used as a shelter for a party and the light is to remain switched on permanently.
Without this option, the LED strip light would constantly switch off and would have to be reactivated by the motion detector. Fortunately, I have the option of choosing between these two types of control.
I also installed a dead switch that switches off all the power and a separate double socket that supplies the vacuum cleaner with power when cleaning the car, for example.
The entire power supply is protected by its own fuse, and I added a separate on/off switch in the house to provide additional control and security.
The surveillance camera was also installed and now provides first-class, high-resolution live images that contribute to the security and monitoring of the carport.

LED lighting in the carport: flexible and versatile
The LED lighting makes a very good impression. The light is uniform and very bright – but does not dazzle. The carport can also be used as an alternative location for smaller celebrations, which provides additional flexibility.
Expansion options
I only installed the LED light strips on every second rafter and connected the entire lighting via one circuit. This arrangement provides sufficient lighting for everyday use and saves energy at the same time.
If necessary, I could install additional light strips on the other rafters and create a different lighting atmosphere via a second circuit. This enables an even more individual lighting design.
Wide range of lighting options
There are practically no limits thanks to the vast number of color variations, brightness levels and light modulations.
This flexibility allows me to adapt the lighting to the mood or activity at any time. Whether warm, cozy light for relaxing evenings or bright, clear light for working in the carport – everything is possible.
Smart lighting solutions
I installed an RGBIC LED light strip on the bar counter in my garden kitchen. I have described the details in the article Designing a smart and efficient garden kitchen – installing lights, sockets and water connections.
In addition to countless lighting effects, it also offers the option of controlling them via app or my Home Assistant. Switching is carried out either by push-button or via a smart Shelly relay.
This not only increases comfort, but also control over the lighting. This allows me to adjust the lighting easily and flexibly without having to be directly at the switch.

Combine motion detector with continuous light
I must point out right at the beginning of this section that not every motion detector is suitable for this circuit.
When installing my LED strip light under the carport, I opted for a circuit that includes both a motion detector and a separate light switch.
This combination enables flexible use of the lighting, depending on the respective needs and situations. The correct selection and installation of the components was essential, particularly with regard to the motion detector and the light switch.
Wiring of motion detector and light switch
The installation began with the wiring of the LED light strip, which is operated with a voltage of 220V. First, the motion detector was integrated into the power circuit.
This serves as an automatic switch that activates the light as soon as movement is detected. The motion detector has been positioned so that it effectively covers the entire area in front of the carport.
I have installed a separate light switch for additional control. This enables me to switch the LED lighting on permanently, independently of the motion detector.
Of particular interest here is the integration of the motion detector into the continuous current, which means that the light switch offers the option of bridging the power supply to the motion detector and constantly illuminating the LEDs.
Why not every motion detector is suitable for such a circuit
Not every motion detector is suitable for combination with a separate light switch in a continuous current circuit.
Some models are designed solely to function as automatic switches, without the option of being switched to a permanent lighting mode. A permanent current flow can lead to the destruction of the motion detector.
For my installation, it was therefore important to choose a motion detector that offers both the functionality of automatic switch-on when motion is detected and also allows integration into a circuit that is controlled by a light switch.
The challenge in the selection process was to find a model that was robust enough to withstand the outdoor conditions under the carport and at the same time meet the technical requirements of the circuit.
It was necessary to choose a motion detector with an appropriate protection class (at least IP65) in order to be protected against dust and water jets, which is critical for outdoor use.
After some research, I found exactly what I was looking for in the Steinel model I had chosen.

Summary and conclusion
Once I had completed the carport, I turned my attention to the electrics to ensure adequate lighting and the necessary power supply.
The focus was on the installation of an LED strip light that impresses with its low power consumption and long service life.
For flexible handling of the lighting, I integrated both a motion detector and a separate light switch, which enabled me to activate the strip light either automatically by movement or manually for permanent lighting.
I made sure to choose a motion detector that was compatible with both direct switching by the light switch and outdoor conditions, as not all models are suitable for such continuous current switching.
The choice fell on a model with protection class IP65, which is robust enough to withstand the weather conditions under the carport and technically meets the requirements of the circuit.
