Build your own carport – calculate and adjust post lengths correctly

The kit for the carport was delivered and the weather was getting better every day. The construction of the carport was now within reach. In order for the construction to run smoothly, the work had to be well planned.

In addition to catering for the construction team, all the necessary tools should also be available.

Tools for the construction of the carport

I was able to quickly answer the question about the necessary tools. In addition to large screw clamps and large Torx bits (which I had previously obtained), I had all the other tools on hand.

Among others, I relied on large wooden snake drills to pre-drill the wooden beams. If the screw length is over 20 cm, the drill bits should be of good quality.

An equally powerful cordless screwdriver was needed for the drills and, of course, for the screws.

Furthermore, for the construction of the carport I needed pins, spirit level, hammer, folding rule and lots of other tools. In my shopping list I have summarized the tools used for you.

I was also able to check the correct height and alignment of the H-post anchors, which had already been concreted in weeks ago, with the end boards of the carport for the first time.

Compensate for height differences in the H-post anchors

Unfortunately, the testing of the positions for the H-post anchors was not quite as satisfactory. Due to the slight (and intended) slope as well as the inaccuracy of the spirit level to the lengths of 6 meters, there were height differences of a good 5cm under the individual posts.

Since I couldn’t change the height of the H-post anchors, I had to account for the height differences in the length of the posts.

So I placed the long end beams on the H-post anchors that had already been concreted.

Afterwards I have underlined the bars so that all points lie in a horizontal line. I will then have to take the height of the relining into account when calculating the posts.

The inaccurate preparatory work was annoying, but could be compensated for later with a well-calculated cutting of the posts.

All in all, the kit was complete, the site was prepared and the tools were also in stock. The construction could now start.
