Two robotic mowers, the TerraMow V600 and the V500, are sitting on the lawn; cameras are mounted on their sleek gray bodies and wheels. The word “TERRAMOW” is clearly visible on both of them. In the background, you can see a hedge and a building—the perfect setting for an outdoor test. www.commaik.de

TerraMow V1000, V600, and Mini 500 Review: Robotic Lawn Mowers Without RTK and Lidar?

Table of Content

Lesezeit 21 Minuten

A robotic lawn mower without RTK, LiDAR, or a boundary wire is supposed to map the yard on its own and still navigate reliably. This is exactly where the TerraMow Mini 500, TerraMow V600, and TerraMow V1000 come in, with their camera-based TerraVision 2.0 technology. I’ve tested the Mini 500 and V600 extensively and am comparing them to the larger V1000. This article highlights the differences in navigation, obstacle detection, the app, coverage area, and edge cutting—and explains which model is the best choice for which type of garden.

The V600 and V1000 are technically very similar. The housing, cutting mechanism, camera system, and core app features are largely identical. The main difference lies in the battery capacity and the resulting coverage.

The Mini 500, on the other hand, isn’t just a V600 with a smaller battery. It features a more compact body, a narrower cutting deck, and manual cutting height adjustment.

My Recommendations by Application

  • For small, irregularly shaped lawns: TerraMow Mini 500
  • A well-rounded all-arounder: TerraMow V600
  • For large lawns: TerraMow V1000

These recommendations apply to the respective area of use. I deliberately avoid using artificial point systems.

My Selection Criteria for the TerraMow Robotic Lawn Mower Review

For the comparison, I ranked all three models based on uniform criteria:

  • Quality of Automatic Mapping
  • Reliable navigation without RTK and LiDAR
  • Obstacle Detection for Small and Large Objects
  • Behavior at Narrow Passages and Between Multiple Zones
  • Edge Trimming and Behavior at Inside and Outside Corners
  • Cutting Width and Cutting Height
  • Battery Life and Cleaning Area
  • Control via the app
  • Installation and Maintenance Costs
  • Price relative to the actual mowing area required
  • Amazon Star Ratings and Recurring Customer Feedback

When it comes to the V600 and Mini 500, I focus on my own experiences. When it comes to the V1000, I clearly distinguish between technical specifications and customer feedback on the one hand, and my own tests on the other.

I have already compared other technical approaches in my comparison of modern robotic mowers without boundary wires.

Robotic Lawn Mowers Without RTK and LiDAR: How TerraVision 2.0 Works

A Comparison of Perimeter Cables, RTK, and LiDAR

A standard robotic lawn mower requires a boundary wire that is laid around the entire lawn. This generally works reliably, but it requires some effort during installation. A broken cable can be difficult to find later on. Changes to flower beds, paths, or lawn edges often require adjusting the wire.

RTK systems determine the mower’s position using satellite signals and an additional RTK antenna. This navigation system can be very precise. However, the antenna requires a suitable location and, if possible, an unobstructed view of the sky. Trees, buildings, or canopies can interfere with reception, depending on the property and the system.

LiDAR scans the surroundings using laser pulses and creates 3D point clouds. The system operates independently of satellite signals and can be used even in low-light conditions. First, it detects the shape, distance, and position of an obstacle. Additional software or sensors are required to classify the content.

I have described the differences between these systems in detail in my article “LiDAR vs. RTK in Robotic Lawn Mowers Without Boundary Wires.”

TerraMow does not include a boundary wire, RTK antenna, or LiDAR on the Mini 500, V600, and V1000 models. Navigation is handled by TerraVision 2.0.

Three cameras for navigation and obstacle detection

TerraVision 2.0 combines two stereo cameras for spatial capture with a semantic AI camera. The stereo cameras determine the distance to and shape of an object. The additional camera provides image data that the software can use to distinguish, for example, between grass, gravel, a tree, a flowerpot, or another obstacle.

This means the mower does more than just detect that there is a geometric shape in front of it. He also tries to figure out what the object is and how he should react to it.

This camera-based perception is particularly useful for complex gardens. Trees, flower beds, patio furniture, various types of flooring, and narrow pathways create an environment where simply determining one’s position is not enough. The key is the interplay between navigation and obstacle detection.

Automatic mapping instead of a manual drive-through

This mapping method differs from many RTK or LiDAR systems. Instead of having to manually drive along the edge of the lawn, the robot explores the area on its own. It starts by following paths that are relatively far apart and gradually covers the entire garden.

In my tests, this process took longer than simple manual edge mapping. A detailed visual map was created for this purpose. With the V600, even smaller features on paths and adjacent areas were visible.

After mapping, you can edit the detected lawn areas in the app. Zones can be separated or merged, passages can be added, and no-go zones can be designated. The map will continue to be updated during subsequent mowing operations.

Limitations of a purely camera-based robotic mower

Cameras require usable image data. Regular nighttime operation is therefore not planned or recommended. For me, this isn’t a major drawback, since I don’t run robotic lawn mowers at night or at dusk anyway, for animal welfare reasons.

Problems can arise on open lawns without clearly defined boundaries. Ponds, pools, drop-offs, and public paths should not be left entirely to AI. Such areas must be clearly secured or designated as no-go zones in the app.

My hands-on test of the Dreame A1 Pro—without a boundary wire or RTK—shows how an alternative system with manual LiDAR mapping performs.

TerraMow V600 Robotic Lawn Mower Review: My All-Around Mower for Up to 600 Square Meters

The TerraMow V600 was my first in-depth test of TerraVision 2.0. My lawn consists of three interconnected sections. The mower must navigate through a narrow passage, cross a sidewalk, and then locate additional zones on its own.

Installing the charging station, power supply, and TerraMow app

The installation began with the construction of the covered charging station. Next, I plugged in the power adapter and paired the robot with the TerraMow app via Bluetooth. Once the Wi-Fi information was entered, the setup was complete.

The standard TerraMow app is designed for the V600 and V1000:

The V600 also has a 4G module. This is especially useful in places where the Wi-Fi doesn’t reach the entire yard. The package or offer includes a limited-time data plan. After this period expires, additional costs may apply.

Mapping and Reliable Navigation in My Garden

The V600 automatically detected my three lawns and combined them into a single map. Mapping took significantly longer than with some of the RTK and LiDAR models I tested. However, she went into great detail afterward.

During daily operation, the mower reliably passed through the passage. Crossing the street on the sidewalk worked, too. It was able to drive over the gravel areas at the edge without getting stuck or pushing out large amounts of gravel.

At first, the black lids on my valve boxes were perceived as obstacles and driven around. In the app, I was able to mark these areas as drivable and adjust the relevant obstacle height. After that, those areas were mowed as well.

Obstacle Detection in a Real-World Test

During my obstacle test, the V600 detected a stuffed hedgehog in standard mode and avoided it. The robot then checked again later to see if the skipped area was clear once more.

This is not a standardized safety test and does not prove complete protection for animals. However, it shows that the camera-based obstacle detection system responded as expected in my specific test.

Nevertheless, children and animals should not be left unattended on the active mowing area.

Edge cut, strips, and cross-section

I was particularly impressed by the edge cut. At suitable outside corners, the V600 was able to drive over the curb. When navigating inside corners, he used an unusual maneuver: He drove into the corner, backed up, and approached it again in reverse.

As a result, this behavior led to less grass left standing in my yard compared to many other robotic mowers in the test. However, due to design constraints, it is not possible to completely avoid a narrow, unmowed strip along walls or lawn edges that cannot be driven over.

You can set the cutting direction, overlap, and distance from the edge of the lawn in the app. This allowed me to create long strokes and a uniform cut pattern.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the TerraMow V600

Advantages Disadvantages
Automatic and Detailed Mapping Mapping takes a relatively long time
Reliable navigation through my three zones No regular nighttime service
Reliable Obstacle Detection 11.8 kg weight
Electric Cutting Height Adjustment Too Cautious at First with Underground Tanks
Excellent edge and inside corner cuts More expensive than the Mini 500
Wi-Fi and 4G Cell phone service can result in ongoing costs
IPX6 enclosure Cameras need a clear view

Amazon ratings and customer reviews for the TerraMow V600

During my research, Amazon listed the TerraMow V600 as having a rating of 4.8 out of 5 stars based on 88 reviews. These figures represent a snapshot and are subject to change at any time.

The following points are repeatedly highlighted positively in customer feedback:

  • Easy setup
  • reliable automatic mapping
  • Stable navigation without a boundary wire
  • Comprehensive app settings
  • Good obstacle detection
  • Systematic mowing patterns and an even cut

There has been some criticism regarding how the mower handles overhanging plants and difficult lawn edges. Some customers feel that the price is high compared to basic corded robotic mowers.

This feedback aligns with my own test in many respects. I was able to correct the initially cautious response to my ground tanks by adjusting the settings in the app. When trimming the edges, the result depends heavily on whether the lawn’s edge can be safely driven over.

TerraMow Mini 500 Review: A Compact Choice for Smaller Gardens

The Mini 500 is designed to incorporate the core capabilities of the larger models into a smaller and more affordable design. I used the mower for two weeks on an area of about 400 square meters, which was relatively close to its recommended maximum area.

More compact design and three blades

Measuring 55.5 × 37.1 × 26.7 cm and weighing 10.1 kg, the Mini 500 is more compact than the V600 and V1000. This can be an advantage in narrow passageways and small gardens.

On the underside, an 18-cm-wide cutting disc with three freely moving blades is in operation. The cutting height can be adjusted between 20 and 60 mm. Unlike with the V600, this is not done electronically via the app, but manually on the device itself.

The Mini 500 also uses TerraVision 2.0 and three cameras. Camera-based navigation thus follows the same basic principle as in the V600 and V1000.

Setup with the TerraMow Pro app

For my test unit, I used the TerraMow Pro app to set it up. The connection was initially established via Bluetooth and then via Wi-Fi within a few minutes. Since TerraMow may change the app assignments for new models, you should check the included QR code or the current product manual before installation.

The corresponding app links are:

Before mapping, you should check to see if a firmware update is available. This provides access to the latest improvements in navigation, mapping, and obstacle detection.

Mapping, narrow sections, and various types of terrain

The Mini 500 also had to recognize several zones in my yard and navigate existing pathways on its own. In addition to regular grass, I observed how it behaved on gravel, gravel paths, and in narrow passages.

Automatic mapping worked on the same principle as with the V600. The robot explored the entire area instead of just following the outer edge.

What impressed me most during my daily mowing routine was the maneuverability. The smaller housing makes it easier to turn and navigate through tight spaces. However, the narrower cut width means that more strips are needed to cover the same area.

Edges and Inside Corners on the Mini 500

The Mini 500 replicates the V600’s eye-catching reverse maneuver. This allowed it to tackle difficult inside corners with greater precision than many models that can only turn in an arc.

With flush lawn edging, the robot may occasionally drive over the edge. Due to the way they are constructed, grass tends to grow against walls, raised beds, or other solid boundaries. The result of edging therefore depends heavily on the design of the lawn edges.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the TerraMow Mini 500

Advantages Disadvantages
Compact dimensions Smaller cutting width of 18 cm
Good maneuverability in tight spaces Cutting height can only be adjusted manually
Automatic Mapping Less land set aside
Navigation Without RTK and LiDAR No regular nighttime service
Good edge and inside corner cuts Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; 4G optional depending on the trim level
Up to 150 minutes of runtime, according to the manufacturer Additional cell phone charges may apply
IPX6 and easy cleaning Less efficient for large areas

Amazon ratings and customer reviews for the Mini 500

At the time of my review, there were no reliable Amazon star ratings for the Mini 500 with a sufficient number of reviews. That’s why I won’t assign a replacement rating or adopt the artificial score from the Roundups.ai draft.

Alleged customer feedback is also not included here. Once there are a sufficient number of reviews, this section can be updated with Amazon star ratings and recurring feedback.

My assessment is therefore based solely on my own testing, the technical specifications, and a hands-on comparison with the V600.

TerraMow V1000: Research-Based Classification for Large Lawns

The search term “TerraMow V1000 Review” needs to be properly categorized in this roundup: I haven’t used this model myself. My personal experience is with the V600 and Mini 500.

For the V1000, I’m using the technical specifications, the shared platform with the V600, and summarized customer feedback. The V1000 is therefore not presented as a separate field test.

The V600 and V1000 use the same basic technology as the V Series

Like the V600, the V1000 features TerraVision 2.0, three cameras, automatic mapping, and electric cutting height adjustment between 25 and 75 mm.

Both mowers feature:

  • 20.3 cm cutting width
  • three blades
  • Electric cutting height adjustment
  • Wi-Fi and 4G
  • a noise level of less than 54 dB, according to the manufacturer
  • IPX6
  • Up to 18° or 32.5% gradeability
  • 11.8 kg weight

The key difference lies in the battery:

  • V600: 3.8 Ah or 84.36 Wh
  • V1000: 4.5 Ah or 98.55 Wh

As a result, the specified runtime increases from 120 to 150 minutes. TerraMow classifies the V600 for lawns up to 600 m² and the V1000 for areas up to 1,200 m².

In the video about the V600, the maximum area of the V1000 was still listed as 1,000 m². According to the current technical specifications, the correct figure is up to 1,200 m².

For what kinds of gardens is the V1000 suitable?

The V1000 is particularly useful for large lawns, where the V600’s smaller battery would result in frequent interruptions for recharging.

The longer term offers advantages in the following areas:

  • Lawn areas larger than 600 m²
  • several large zones
  • longer sections between the areas
  • complex gardens with many obstacles
  • large areas that are mowed in long swaths

For a garden measuring 300 or 400 square meters, however, the V1000 is too large. Navigation, cutting width, and obstacle detection aren’t necessarily better than on the V600. You’re mainly paying for the larger battery and the additional mowing area.

Strengths and Weaknesses of the TerraMow V1000

Advantages Disadvantages
Recommended for areas up to 1,200 m² Highest Price in Comparison
Largest battery of the three models Oversized for small gardens
Up to 150 minutes of runtime Same cutting width as the V600
Automatic Mapping No regular nighttime service
Electric cutting height adjustment Cameras require a clear and unobstructed view
Wi-Fi and 4G Cell phone service can result in ongoing costs
TerraVision 2.0 I haven’t tested this myself

All in all, the TerraMow V1000 is the sensible choice when you actually need to mow a large area. For smaller lawns, the TerraMow V1000 offers hardly any advantages over the V600 that would justify the higher price.

Amazon ratings and customer reviews for the TerraMow V1000

During my research, Amazon showed a rating of 5.0 out of 5 stars for the V1000. With about 29 reviews, the review base was still relatively small. The value should therefore be viewed as a positive snapshot rather than a definitive assessment of quality.

The following are mentioned particularly often in customer feedback:

  • Easy installation without an RTK antenna
  • automatic mapping
  • Reliable navigation in larger gardens
  • Good obstacle detection
  • systematic maintenance of lawns
  • Extensive settings in the app

The high purchase price is cited as the main disadvantage. Some feedback also describes cautious behavior around overhanging plants and in very narrow areas.

Since I haven’t tested the V1000 myself, I am explicitly stating these points as a summary of customer opinions. My positive experiences with navigation and obstacle detection are based on the V600 and should not be interpreted as a separate review of the TerraMow V1000.

Which TerraMow model is the best choice?

Mini 500 for small and winding lawns

The Mini 500 is my top choice among the robotic mowers I’ve tested, provided the lawn area is definitely less than 500 square meters. Its compact design comes in handy in tight spaces, and TerraVision 2.0 offers the same basic navigation concept as the larger models.

The most important compromise is the manual cutting height. If it is changed only occasionally, the difference is hardly noticeable in everyday life. When there are multiple zones with different cutting heights, the V600 is more convenient.

The V600: A Well-Rounded All-Arounder

For me, the V600 is the most well-rounded model in this comparison. It offers a wider cutting width, electric height adjustment, 4G, and ample cutting capacity for typical medium-sized home gardens.

For a lawn between about 400 and 600 square meters, or if there are several challenging areas, I would choose this model over the Mini 500. The TerraMow V600 robotic mower has performed reliably in my yard and has been particularly impressive when cutting along the edges.

V1000 for large gardens and longer runtime

The V1000 is the right choice if you need to mow more than 600 square meters on a regular basis. The larger battery reduces the number of charging interruptions and extends the recommended mowing area to up to 1,200 square meters.

For a garden measuring 300 or 400 square meters, it offers virtually no practical advantage over the V600. The mower deck, housing, and basic navigation are virtually identical.

App, 4G data plan, and recurring costs

The V600 and V1000 are controlled via the TerraMow app. The TerraMow Pro app is available for the Mini 500.

Among other things, the apps allow you to:

  • Edit Maps
  • Split or Merge Zones
  • Add passages
  • Create No-Go Zones
  • Set Schedules
  • Changing the direction of the cut and the paths
  • Adjust the sensitivity of obstacle detection
  • Install Firmware Updates
  • Configure Rain Settings
  • Start and Monitor Mowing Operations

The app supports 4G, but not navigation

The V600 and V1000 have a built-in 4G module. However, a cellular connection is not required for navigation. Both robotic mowers use TerraVision 2.0, which features three cameras and AI image recognition, to navigate their surroundings. Once it’s set up, you can edit a saved map even without Wi-Fi or cellular service. Above all, 4G enables remote access via the TerraMow app, status notifications, and live monitoring outside of Wi-Fi range. According to TerraMow, the current package includes a 1 GB data plan that is valid for one year from activation. Once your data allowance has expired or been used up, you may incur additional charges for another data package.

Compatible accessories:

Whether a six-blade deck in your own yard offers a noticeable advantage depends on lawn growth, mowing frequency, and the desired cut.

Maintenance, Cleaning, and Safety

All three models use freely moving razor blades. These should be checked regularly for damage and wear. Dull blades tend to tear the grass rather than cut it cleanly.

Thanks to the IPX6 rating, the mowers can be cleaned with water according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Before working on the underside, the robot must be completely turned off. It’s a good idea to wear appropriate gloves when changing the blades.

IPX6 does not mean that the housing may be submerged. When cleaning with a garden hose, you should also make sure to keep the cameras clean and free of water spots afterward.

Even good obstacle detection is no substitute for supervision when children or pets are playing in the yard. As a general rule, I let my robotic mowers run during the day and avoid running them at dusk or at night.

Summary: A Comparison of the TerraMow Mini 500, V600, and V1000

In this post, I compare the TerraMow Mini 500, V600, and V1000. All three robotic mowers use TerraVision 2.0 and navigate exclusively using three cameras and artificial intelligence. As a result, they do not require a boundary wire, an RTK antenna, or LiDAR.

I tested the V600 and Mini 500 myself in my backyard. Both models impressed me with their automatic mapping, reliable obstacle detection, and exceptionally thorough cleaning along edges and in inside corners. The compact Mini 500 is particularly well-suited for winding lawns up to 500 m². However, its cutting height is adjusted manually. The V600 features a wider cutting deck, electric cutting height adjustment, and greater comfort for areas up to 600 m².

I evaluate the V1000 based on its technical specifications and customer feedback. It uses the same basic technology as the V600, but has a larger battery and is designed for lawns up to 1,200 m².

This makes for a clear choice: The Mini 500 is the economical solution for smaller gardens, the V600 is the well-rounded all-rounder, and the V1000 is the right choice for large lawns. Amazon reviews are taken into account as a supplement, but they do not replace my own practical experience.

My Conclusion on the TerraMow Robotic Lawn Mower Review

The new generation of camera-based robotic mowers demonstrates that reliable navigation is possible even without a boundary wire, RTK antenna, or LiDAR.

In my tests, both the V600 and the Mini 500 automatically mapped their lawns, detected obstacles, and systematically mowed multiple areas. I was particularly impressed by the edge and inside corner cuts on both models.

The Mini 500 is the most cost-effective choice for small and medium-sized lawns. It is compact, versatile, and builds on the key strengths of TerraVision 2.0. There are some compromises in terms of cutting width, cutting area, and the cutting height, which can only be adjusted manually.

For me, the V600 is the best all-around model in this comparison. It offers more comfort, a wider cutting deck, and plenty of power to spare—all without the significant price premium of the V1000.

The V1000 is the right choice for large lawns ranging from 600 to 1,200 square meters. Its advantage does not lie in fundamentally better obstacle detection, but mainly in its larger battery and longer battery life.

This leads to a clear choice:

  • Up to 500 m² and for tight spaces: TerraMow Mini 500
  • Up to 600 m² and with greater ease of use: TerraMow V600
  • Over 600 to 1,200 m²: TerraMow V1000

Frequently Asked Questions About the TerraMow Mini 500, V600, and V1000

Do the TerraMow Mini 500, V600, and V1000 really not need a boundary wire?

Yes. All three robotic mowers operate without a boundary wire, RTK antenna, or LiDAR. Navigation is handled by three cameras and TerraVision 2.0. During automatic mapping, the robot detects lawns, paths, flower beds, and other boundaries. This eliminates the need to lay a boundary wire or install an RTK antenna.

How reliable is navigation that relies solely on cameras?

In my field tests, the TerraMow V600 and the Mini 500 performed with remarkable reliability. Trees, flower beds, planters, gravel areas, and clearly defined lawn edges were generally classified correctly. The advantage over RTK is that a clear view of the sky is not required. Challenges include hard-to-distinguish transitions, very tall grass, dirty cameras, and areas where the lawn and flower beds blend together almost seamlessly.

Can a camera-based robotic mower completely replace RTK and LiDAR?

For many gardens—both regular and irregularly shaped—the answer is now: yes. Camera-based navigation requires neither satellite reception nor an additional antenna. At dusk or in the dark, however, this method reaches its natural limits. RTK or LiDAR systems may therefore still offer advantages for certain parcels of land. What matters most is not so much the theoretically best technique as the layout of the garden in question.

Which model is best suited for which type of lawn?

The TerraMow Mini 500 is designed for lawns up to 500 square meters and is particularly well-suited for smaller, landscaped gardens. The V600 covers up to 600 square meters and also features a cutting height that can be adjusted electronically via the app. The V1000 is designed for areas of up to 1,200 square meters and comes with the larger battery. Since the V600 and V1000 are technically very similar, the choice between these two models depends mainly on the size of the mowing area.

How does automatic mapping work?

Once set up, the robot automatically navigates the accessible lawn area while creating a map. It is not usually necessary to manually drive along the entire edge of the lawn. You can then use the app to define individual zones, routes, and no-go zones. For problematic areas, the map can be corrected using small exclusion zones or, in the case of larger changes, recreated.

Can multiple separate lawn areas and narrow passages be mowed?

You can manage multiple zones within the app, provided the robotic mower can reach the areas via a passable path. Paths made of paving stones, gravel, or other suitable surfaces can serve as walkways. How well this works depends on the width, the surface, and the side boundaries. On the other hand, lawn areas that are completely separated from one another with no accessible path between them require the mower to be moved manually.

How well does the obstacle detection feature work with animals, toys, and garden items?

The three cameras detect a wide range of typical obstacles and automatically navigate around them. In my tests, the V600 and the Mini 500 reliably responded to larger objects, plants, trees, and other clearly identifiable obstacles. However, very small, flat objects—or those partially hidden by grass—can still pose a problem. Therefore, even AI-based obstacle detection is no guarantee of safety. Before mowing, toys, garden hoses, and small objects should be removed from the lawn.

Do TerraMow models mow even when it’s raining or at night?

The housings are water-resistant; however, mowing on very wet lawns is not recommended. Wet grass can stick to the mower, put a strain on the turf, and result in a poorer cut. If rain is detected, the robot can automatically return to the charging station. Operation in the dark is not intended due to the system’s reliance solely on camera-based navigation. Mowing should therefore take place during daylight hours.

How well do the Mini 500, V600, and V1000 mow along lawn edges and in inside corners?

The results are particularly good with drive-over lawn edges because the robot can extend part of its body beyond the lawn. In my tests, the special reverse maneuver in inside corners was also impressive. Due to the design, a narrow strip of grass remains along a wall, a high curb, or a fence. In such cases, occasional manual touch-ups cannot be completely avoided.

Do robotic lawn mowers require a constant Wi-Fi connection, 4G, or a paid data plan?

A constant Internet connection is not required for navigation itself. Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity are primarily needed for app control, status notifications, and firmware updates. The V600 and V1000 also support 4G if the Wi-Fi signal doesn’t reach the entire yard. During setup, the Mini 500 connects via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi; the available cellular options depend on the specific model. Before making a purchase, you should therefore check what connectivity options are included in the package being offered.
