Drainage – retrofitting a horizontal barrier yourself
In addition to draining the outside of my villa, which was built in 1900, some of the basement walls also need to be sealed from the inside. The horizontal barrier in the 36 to 80 centimeter thick walls is no longer in tact.
This time I dared to install a retrofit horizon blocker and used the NovuSticks for this. Here I describe my approach and my experiences.
What is a horizontal barrier and what is it important for?
Natural processes such as the osmosis effect can make older houses without adequate foundations susceptible to damp.
This moisture can penetrate the masonry through rain, snow or groundwater, especially if the foundation is not watertight. As a result, dry wall areas continuously attract water, which can lead to salting out.
Salt deposits are visible signs of salts and minerals that are transported with the rising water in the masonry.
When the water evaporates, these substances remain in the masonry, manifest themselves at a certain height on the wall and create visual defects that can resemble foam or fungal cultures.
Although salinization is not immediately life-threatening, it should not be neglected. In addition to aesthetic impairments, there is a long-term risk of structural wall damage.
It is therefore essential to tackle the cause, especially in the basement area, rather than just focusing on treating the visible symptoms.
An effective solution aims to prevent the ingress of moisture and provide lasting protection for the masonry.

Horizontal barrier – What does it do?
An effective horizontal barrier protects the masonry from rising damp by blocking the penetration of water from the ground.
This insurmountable barrier is found as a separating layer in the masonry of modern houses. Waterproof building materials such as tar paper, bitumen layers or plastics are placed directly in the wall just above the foundation.
These water-impermeable layers prevent water from rising through the walls and thus also the evaporation of minerals and salts.
In older houses, the horizontal barrier, if present at all, can become damaged over time.
Although materials such as sandpaper or tar paper generally last for many decades, they can become porous over time and the water then finds ways to rise in the masonry.
In such cases, it is advisable to check, renew or replace the horizontal layer to prevent long-term damage.
Horizontal barrier, what variants are there?
There are various options for retrofitting a horizontal barrier, with chemical methods using injection fluids being the most common.
In this technique, a liquid is introduced into the masonry, where it spreads and gradually hardens to form a waterproof layer.
An alternative method is mechanical barriers, for example by inserting metal plates into the cut masonry. After installation, the joints are sealed again so that water can reach the slab but not beyond it.
Another option is to use resins, such as epoxy resin.
In this process, the resins are pressed into the masonry under high pressure, where they are distributed over a large area. After drying, the resins become impermeable to water and achieve the same effect as injection fluids or metal plates.
While the subsequent installation of a horizontal barrier with injection fluids is also possible for the experienced layman, the other methods are more for professionals. In addition to many years of experience, they also have the necessary tools.

What experiences have I already had?
My house, built in 1900, stands on a 50 cm thick floor slab made of a mixture of gravel and sand, without a solid concrete foundation. The slope and the loamy soil create a kind of clay pit in which water collects during heavy rain or thaw.
This penetrates the porous foundation and makes the basement areas damp and clammy.
I have gained experience with various methods to dry out my basement walls. One effective solution was the use of injection fluids using the“bottle variant“.
This method forms a subsequent horizontal barrier and has proven itself in my practice. However, it has a decisive disadvantage, especially for living spaces.
There is a possibility that parts of the liquid may not fully enter the drill hole or cause damage to the floor when dripping out. The hardened and waterproof residue of the injection fluid then leaves behind ugly stains that are difficult to remove.
I am now planning to test a clean and sterile variant for the upcoming drainage in the estate agent’s office. This is to prevent the drying of the basement walls from leaving unwanted residue or damage to the walls or floor in the already renovated office space.

Draining with NovuSticks
The NovuSticks are made of a stable and extremely absorbent material. Similar to a tube-shaped sponge, they are pushed into drilled holes, whereby the liquid is gradually released from the tubes into the surrounding masonry.
With a length of 18 cm, the sticks are perfect for a 24-centimeter-thick brick wall. However, I think the recommended drill hole size of 12 millimeters is too small, but I’ll come to that later.
The dirt produced during application is limited to the drilling process and the subsequent plastering of the holes. Occasionally, additional dirt can get into the home, especially when re-plastering damaged areas on the walls.
Drill holes for the horizontal barrier
I proceeded as follows to install a retrofitted horizontal barrier with the sticks:
The sticks are installed in the bed joint of the masonry. To do this, I had to knock the plaster off the wall just above the floor and expose the lowest accessible bed joint.
The bed joint is the layer of mortar used to join the bricks together when building a house.
To mark the position of the bed joint, I can now either knock off the entire width of the plaster or mark the position on the plaster with a spirit level. If the plaster is badly damaged, the first approach makes more sense.
After the bed joint has been marked or exposed, I make the other markings for the drill holes. These must be inserted horizontally into the bed joint and about four to five centimeters in front of the outside of the wall.
To calculate the drill hole depth, I therefore need the thickness of the wall, which I can simply measure at the window reveals or the doors. In my case, the wall thickness is 36 cm plus the interior and exterior plaster. So I drill 31 cm deep with a 12 mm drill bit.
I mark the drilling depth on my drill bit with a piece of adhesive tape. Although the manufacturer recommends a 12 mm drill bit, I have found that a 14 mm drill bit may be more effective as the sticks only fit very tightly into the drill hole.
I mark the positions of the drill holes on the bearing joint at intervals of 12 cm. The distance to the corners is five centimeters.
When drilling, you quickly notice whether the masonry is damp, wet or just clammy. The deeper I drilled into the wall, the more I noticed the damp.
The drill bit gets stuck more often and the drilling dust is no longer fine, but becomes increasingly moist and solid, almost clay-like. This is a sure sign that there is moisture in the wall.
As the drill bit was increasingly clogged with drilling dust, I could no longer drill effectively into the wall. I therefore pulled the drill out again and again and cleaned it with a wire brush.
I then put the drill back into the drill tube and was able to gain a few centimeters in depth again.
After drilling, the holes must be cleaned. The use of a compressed air gun is effective, but an oil-free air compressor should be used so as not to impair the effectiveness of the horizontal barrier.
If the oil is blown into the boreholes via the compressed air, the effect of the horizontal barrier may be impaired. The liquid could no longer penetrate the masonry properly because the oil film has already formed a watertight barrier.
Alternatively, a powerful vacuum cleaner can remove the drilling dust. I used it to clear my drill holes.
However, I have to say that the drilling dust can be sucked out wonderfully when it is fine and dry. However, if the wall is wet, it becomes increasingly difficult. Even with a good industrial vacuum cleaner, it is difficult to get all the drilling dust out of the hole.
I have achieved the best results by waiting one or two days after the initial drilling and vacuuming. Then I drilled the holes a second time. Due to the drying time, the drilling dust was now much drier and could be removed from the hole more easily with the vacuum cleaner.
Once the holes have been drilled and cleaned, you can start inserting the sticks.

Install sticks for drainage in the drill holes
To use the sticks effectively, simply push them into the drill holes as far as they will go. However, a moist drill hole is crucial for their effectiveness, which is why the hole must be thoroughly rinsed with water beforehand.
I use a small hose attached to a spray bottle to completely water the drill holes from back to front. I lead the hose to the rear end of the borehole and distribute the water by pressing the spray regulator while pulling the hose outwards.
This also flushes the remaining drilling dust out of the hole. It is therefore advisable to cover the area in front of the drill holes well. Kitchen roll, a sponge or cloth should also be available to wipe up the dirty water immediately.
After sufficient watering, the sticks are pushed into the holes. The hole depth should correspond to the length of the sticks.
My drill holes are 31 cm deep, while a stick is only 18 cm long. To fill the hole completely, I therefore insert not just one stick, but one and a half sticks.
The excess half stick can be used in the next drill hole.
Solid and robust scissors or a cutter knife are suitable for cutting the sticks. However, there are also special embroidery cutters.

Sealing drill holes
To ensure that the introduced liquid remains in the drill hole and is effectively distributed in the masonry, it is necessary to seal the drill hole on the surface.
A practical method is to mix a small amount of mortar or plaster and seal the hole with a trowel.
Personally, I opted for a cost-effective and time-saving option by injecting a ready-mix directly into the drill hole using a cartridge gun.
This solution requires no additional effort, as the ready-mixed mortar can be used directly from the cartridge press.
I sealed the drill holes step by step with the ready-mixed mortar and then smoothed them out with a trowel.

Monitoring and result of drainage
The liquid from the sticks is now gradually distributed in the bed joint of the masonry, where it forms a protective, waterproof layer.
This process prevents rising water from the soil from reaching beyond this layer. As the masonry above will still be damp at first, it will take a while before changes in the room become noticeable.
It can take several weeks or months before the effect of the new retrofitted horizontal barrier is noticeable.
I set up hygrometers in the rooms to track the progress of the drainage. These allow me to monitor whether the retrofitted horizontal barrier is working and no further moisture is penetrating through the masonry from below to evaporate in the room.
An important step after draining is to wait for the wall to dry out completely before applying new plaster. This accelerates the drying process of the wall and effectively prevents new damage.
A quick drainage in the living area, which is completed within a few days, cannot be realized in this way.
In my other cellar rooms, where I have already carried out subsequent drainage with a horizontal barrier, clear improvements can be seen.
Humidity has dropped from 80 percent in some places to a pleasant 60 percent. Although this is still too high for a real living space, the values for a cellar room from 1900 are very good.
The now dry basement rooms can finally be used as a wash house, recreation room or storage room, depending on my needs.

Summary and conclusion
In addition to the exterior renovation, I decided to dry out my 100-year-old town villa by installing a horizontal barrier from the inside to effectively combat the moisture in the basement walls.
For this I used the NovuSticks, an innovative solution to this problem. The horizontal barrier is essential to protect the masonry from rising damp, which can easily penetrate the building without an adequate foundation.
Without this barrier, dry areas of the wall will attract water, which can lead to salting out and, in the worst case, structural damage.
The NovuSticks offered a simple and effective method for retrofitting a horizontal barrier.
After removing the old plaster from the cellar walls and exposing the bed joints, I drilled holes in the joint and inserted the NovuSticks. These absorb water from the masonry and distribute a water-repellent liquid that forms a new horizontal barrier.
The handling was clean and targeted, which was a particular advantage in rooms that had already been renovated. After inserting the sticks, I sealed the drill holes with ready-mixed mortar and monitored the drying process with hygrometers.
This method proved to be effective in reducing moisture in the walls. The humidity in the cellar rooms dropped noticeably, which significantly improved the use of the rooms.
By using the NovuSticks, I was able to realize a sustainable solution to the problem of rising damp without any unwanted residue or damage.
