Install granite washbasin with tap yourself
A few years ago, I converted part of the basement into an office with a kitchenette – but without its own sink. Since then, my wife has been running her insurance office there as insurance broker Florian.
In the last few years and months, I have been more concerned with the entrance area around the estate agent’s office.
The slope was set back and intercepted with a gabion wall. The raised bed in the parking lot was also rebuilt and even equipped with an automatic watering system.
Over the winter months, I was then able to devote myself to the office space again and fulfill a long-held wish of my wife. The offices should now finally have a kitchenette.
Sink or dishwasher?
The rush of customers to the estate agent’s office was particularly high towards the end of the year. The car business provided appointments every hour. To make the customers’ stay as pleasant as possible, each customer was of course also offered a coffee, tea or water to drink.
During the peak season, a complete dishwasher load of cups came together within a short space of time. However, the dishes were always taken two floors up to the apartment to wash them there.
As I had already taken the space for a small kitchenette into account when building the office, now was the time to use it more effectively.
A dishwasher was installed under the right-hand half of the kitchen unit. With this machine, the used cups were quickly “disposed of” and, thanks to the quick wash program, were ready for use again within a very short time.
Of course, there were also times when fewer customers came in for advice. The cups that then accumulated were sometimes left in the dishwasher for days. The coffee and tea stains in particular were then difficult to remove.
A hand basin is ideal for such purposes. In addition to the small washing-up area, the water point is located directly in the kitchenette, so the distances are short.
In short, a sink had to be installed in the existing worktop of the kitchenette.

Which tank should it be?
The choice of sinks is almost endless. There are no limits in terms of shape, color, material and price. However, the worktop set us certain limits. We had to stick to them when choosing the sink.
The washbasin was rectangular in shape and measured a good 120 x 60 cm. This was the standard size for the kitchen blocks. The dishwasher was installed on the left-hand side, so this area was completely ruled out for installation.
The right-hand side remained as it had enough space under the worktop for the installation.
After I had measured the available space for the installation from below, it was clear that we only had an installation size of 45 to 50 cm for the new sink in the kitchenette.
The base unit was smaller than the worktop above it. That was a little disappointing, but it couldn’t be helped.
A rectangular sink was therefore ruled out, as this would only be very small. So it was to be a round washbasin. The choice of material was a little easier again. The pool should be easy to maintain, scratch-resistant and easy to clean.
We quickly chose a beautiful granite washbasin.

The right mixer tap for the washbasin
In addition to the drain, the sink had two more holes on the edge of the basin. The regulator for the stopper was fitted in one hole and the mixer tap or kitchen tap was fitted in the other. As both holes were the same size, the arrangement was freely selectable.
So we needed a mixer tap that would fit into the hole and could also seal it from above.
Another point was the connection of cold water and hot water. When building the kitchenette, I had planned a socket specifically for an instantaneous water heater and installed it in the base unit area.
In principle, it was therefore possible to connect a cold and a hot water pipe to the battery.
However, as there has been no need for hot water so far, the basin mixer should also work with just one connection if necessary.
With a color to match the sink, we also found the right mixer tap.

Only connect cold water? What happens to the other line?
The problem with connecting just one pipe to a mixer tap with two connections is the water damage that inevitably results.
The cold water is connected to the inlet of the mixer tap via a flex hose and as long as only the cold water is turned on, there are no problems.
However, as soon as the mixing lever also opens the hot water, the cold water flows not only through the tap, but directly through the connection for the hot water. And since it is not connected to a water pipe, the water ends up directly under the sink.
My plan now was to connect both armored hoses to the mixer tap. The hose for the cold water was connected to the angle valve on the wall. However, the hose from the hot water was sealed with a plug.
In this way, water enters the hose but can no longer leak out.
Over time, there may be a problem with stagnant water or even salmonella/legionella. But as soon as I install an instantaneous water heater for the hot water, this problem will also be solved.

From storage cellar to estate agent’s office
The installation was somewhat more complicated and time-consuming than originally planned.
As the worktop was already firmly screwed in place, it had to be assembled on site in the small kitchenette.
And after the saw blade holder on my jigsaw broke while I was cutting out the kitchen worktop, I was in despair. I then had to finish a large part with a handsaw.
But I think that the project turned out quite well in the end, or what do you think?
