Lawn Irrigation Comparison Hunter MP Rotator vs. RainBird R-Van
My lawn irrigation system has been extensively rebuilt in recent years in preparation for expansion. The small lawn in front of the office on the east side should be incorporated into the existing lawn irrigation system in a timely manner. I had already calculated the position of the sprinklers.
The area is relatively small, about 10 x 10 meters. Irrigation with the previously installed Hunter i20 sprinklers did not seem very effective to me. I have therefore dealt with more in-depth with the so-called rotator bursts.
Comparison gear sprinklers vs. rotators
A few weeks ago, I already did the first comparison test. In the test, I compared the Hunter Gear Sprinkler I20 with the Hunter MP Rotator. You can find the matching video here or just check out my playlist on garden watering.
The throwing pattern of the two types of sprinklers is fundamentally different. While the gear sprinklers periodically throw the water jet from the left stop to the right stop (and back again), the water comes out of the rotators in a continuous circular path.
The amount of water or water consumption is significantly lower with the MP rotators compared to the gear sprinklers. Thus, these lawn sprinklers can also be used for installations with a lower water pressure and water flow. In turn, of course, then increases the watering time.
Especially for smaller casting distances, Hunter’s MP rotators seemed better to me. Therefore, the lawn in front of the office should also be watered with the rotators.

Hunter and Rain Bird Rotators
In the video comments on the comparison of the Hunter i20 gear sprinkler and the Hunter MP rotator, you expressed the desire to compare the different rotator nozzles from Hunter and Rain Bird.
Rain Bird products have only been used in my valve boxes and manifolds so far.
Since I had not yet had any experience with Rain Bird’s blasters, I was of course happy to comply with this request and did a comparison test with the Hunter MP rotator and its counterpart from Rain Bird, the R-VAN nozzle.

Hunter MP-Rotator and Rain Bird R-VAN video comparison
I captured the comparison of the two irrigation systems, Hunter’s MP rotators and Rain Bird’s R-VAN nozzles in my video. In addition to mounting and connecting the two sprinklers to the water line, I also filmed the adjustment or fine-tuning of the throw pattern.
I also tested the special throw pattern of the rotator nozzles, with the rather thin water jets, in strong wind conditions. I was quite surprised by the result.

Information on the design and construction of a lawn irrigation system.
Of course, those who plan to build their own irrigation system must take into account several things and factors.
Water pressure, water flow rate or even the amount of precipitation per square meter and hour are just a few factors.
Especially for the water consumption – and the question whether my water connection or the pump capacity is also enough, I have made a separate video. You can also find the video“Planning Lawn Irrigation – Calculating Sprinklers | Is My Connection Enough?” in my playlist.
The key figures and product specifications are provided by the suppliers.
In my video, I go into more detail about the tables for calculating throw distances, taking into account the applied water pressure and the available water flow rate.

Conclusion: Hunter vs. Rain Bird
Basically, the two nozzles or manufacturers differ only slightly. Both deliver very good quality and water the lawn quite evenly. The threads of the nozzles are identical, so that they can be interchanged.
The Hunter nozzles are a tad more wind stable, but I don’t need any tools to adjust the Rain Bird nozzles.
It’s hard for me to pick a winner.
