Securing a slope with gabions – fleece water conduits
Over the last few weeks, I have now removed the plateau and rebuilt the slope. The gabions were also set up and aligned. However, further preparations are required before backfilling can begin.
What care will I need?
On the one hand, the lower part of the property is also to be supplied with electricity and water in the future. So I plan to equip the driveway with a roller shutter door. This would require a power connection which I would now have to take into account.
As soon as the roller shutter has been installed, guests and visitors should be able to announce themselves at the street via a bell system. So a data cable would be necessary here.
The lighting and control of my irrigation components also require a wired supply.
I have already laid the corresponding empty conduits above the slope. The other media lines will then be connected to these.
I would also like to install an additional water supply for the irrigation systems below the gabion wall. I also had the necessary connection ready in the upper garden area as a precaution.
Laying empty conduit and water pipes under the gabions
I would need some of the media, such as the water supply, promptly. A raised bed with automatic irrigation should be built on the slope between the parking lots this year.
I would only need other lines later. For example, the power and data cables for the new roller shutter door and the door intercom system. It was therefore important for me to be able to lay or replace cables and lines flexibly at a later date.
I therefore laid M32 empty conduits from the house to the back of the gabions.
These empty pipes were then installed under the stone baskets in large arches. From this central point, further empty conduits now follow to the left and right along the gabion wall.
I then repeatedly fed these supply lines forward under the gabions at intervals of approx. 5 meters.
I am therefore able to pull the required cables to different locations at a later date. I also pulled a 25 mm PE pipe over the plateau to the stone baskets.
This also protrudes at the front and offers me the opportunity to build a central water distribution system at this point.
Video – Laying the water pipe and empty conduit under the gabions
In part 4 of my project series on the construction of my slope stabilization with gabions, I recorded the laying of the empty conduits and the water pipes. The installation of the protective fleece on the back of the gabions was also examined in more detail in this video.

Connect electrical equipotential bonding to the gabions?
Due to completely different circumstances, I was forced to improve my potential equalization for the house at the same time. In addition to an additional earthing rod, I also laid a good 50 meters of earthing wire.
From the plateau above the new gabion wall, I installed this wire behind the gabions. As this area will later be backfilled with soil, the equalization function should work without any problems.
I also connected the earthing wire directly to the gabions using special connectors. This means that all the grids in the wall, which is over 30 meters long, act as equipotential bonding.
Incidentally, I created my own video on this as part of another lawn irrigation project.
I’m sure I’ll realize in a few years that I haven’t laid enough empty conduits or water pipes after all. But from today’s perspective, that should be enough.

Fleece to protect the back of the gabions
As the gabions serve as slope stabilization, they are completely backfilled with soil. The soil is filled at an angle of approx. 30° behind the gabions to the level of the plateau and compacted.
This slope will later be planted with decorative plants.
However, if it rains heavily, there is a risk that the soil will wash through the baskets. To prevent this, I attached a fabric fleece to the back of the stone baskets.
The protective fleece is water-permeable and thus reduces the back pressure. However, the soil, sand and dirt are reliably retained.
This ensures that the front will still look as beautiful in many years as it did on the first day.
