ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK vs Gardena Sileno – A comparison experience
My Gardena Sileno+ has reliably mowed my lawn for over 10 years. I was generally satisfied with the robotic lawnmower – it worked reliably and kept the lawn in a neat condition.
However, there was a recurring problem: cable breaks. The boundary and control wires, which were essential for the navigation of the Gardena Sileno, were repeatedly damaged over time. There were many reasons for this:
- Careless gardening work, such as mowing the lawn or digging with a spade, led to the cables being accidentally cut.
- Ant-eating was an unexpected problem. The small insects had eaten away at the plastic sheathing of the cables, causing the exposed metal conductors to corrode and ultimately no longer conduct electricity.
Finding the broken areas was a time-consuming task every time. As the cables were buried underground, I had to locate them with a special cable locator. The defective areas were then uncovered, repaired and safely reburied. I have described more about this in my detailed instructions:
🔗 Find and repair a broken control cable: commaik.com/2024/01/lawn-robot-broken-control-cable-find-and-repair-easily/
🔗 Repairing wire breaks on the boundary wire: commaik.com/2024/11/repair-broken-cable-boundary-wire-for-maehrobot-finding-and-repairing/
These constant repairs were not only time-consuming, but also frustrating. So I was open to the idea of testing a cordless robotic lawnmower. The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK, which does not require a boundary wire, seemed to be the perfect solution.

A comparison of control technologies: boundary wire vs. RTK & LiDAR for robotic lawnmowers
Different control technologies for robotic lawn mowers
Robotic mowers use different technologies for navigation and area limitation. There are basically two main categories:
- Robot lawn mower with boundary wire
- Robot mower without boundary wire
Within these categories, there are different control variants, each of which has advantages and disadvantages.
Robotic lawn mower with boundary wire – Classic control with wire
Most conventional robotic lawnmowers use boundary wires that are laid around the area to be mowed. These cables emit a low-frequency signal that the robotic lawnmower recognizes and interprets as a boundary.
Functionality of the boundary wire
- The boundary wire is buried in the ground or fixed to the surface along the edge of the lawn and around obstacles.
- The cable is connected to a base station that generates the signal.
- The robotic lawnmower recognizes the signal and turns automatically as soon as it reaches the wire boundary.
- Some models have an additional control cable that runs across the garden and helps the robot to reach different zones efficiently.
My Gardena Sileno uses exactly this technology. In addition to the boundary wire, a control cable ensures that the robot reliably finds its way to all areas of my garden.
Variants of wired navigation
- Simple boundary wire – standard solution for many robotic lawnmowers, only limits the working area.
- Boundary wire with control cable – Enables more targeted control within complex gardens.
- Sensor-assisted navigation – Some robots combine boundary wires with tilt, impact or ultrasonic sensors to better detect obstacles.
Disadvantages of this method
- Complex installation: The cable must be laid, fixed and, if necessary, buried.
- Maintenance-intensive: cable breaks caused by roots, animals or gardening work often lead to malfunctions.
- Difficult to change zones: Changing the mowing area is only possible by adjusting the cable.
- Chaos navigation: Many models operate randomly, which makes them inefficient.
- Lieferumfang: 1x Mähroboter SILENO life 1500 m², 1x smart Gateway, 1x Ladestation, 200 m Begrenzungskabel, 4x Verbinder, 5x Anschlussklemmen, 300 Haken
Robot mower without perimeter wire – Modern navigation with RTK & LiDAR
The new generation of robotic lawnmowers completely dispenses with boundary wires and instead uses satellite and sensor technology. The two most important technologies in this area are RTK (Real-Time Kinematics) and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging).
RTK navigation (as with the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK)
RTK (Real-Time Kinematics) is a high-precision GPS technology. It uses a reference station that sends GPS correction data to the robot. This allows it to orient itself within a few centimeters of the garden.
How RTK works
- An RTK reference station is installed in the garden and receives GPS signals.
- It processes the raw data from the satellites and sends correction signals to the robotic lawnmower.
- The robot uses this data to calculate its exact position and navigate precisely.
- This allows the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK to mow in orderly paths – without any cables.
Advantages of RTK
- Extremely precise navigation accurate to ±2 cm
- No cables required, flexible surface adjustment via the app
- Structured mowing strategy instead of chaos principle
LiDAR navigation (supplement to RTK technology)
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) is a sensor technology that uses laser beams to scan the surroundings.
How LiDAR works
- The robotic lawnmower emits light pulses and measures the reflections.
- It creates a 3D image of the surroundings and can recognize obstacles.
- In combination with cameras and AI, the robot can distinguish living objects such as animals or people from solid obstacles.
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK uses LiDAR support for obstacle detection. It stops or drives around objects before touching them.

Setting up the charging station & RTK station
The charging station and the RTK station are central components for the operation and navigation of the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK. To ensure that the robotic lawnmower works reliably, the right choice of location is crucial.
1. position the charging station
The charging station serves as a starting and return point for the robotic lawnmower. The location must be well chosen to ensure a stable connection to the power source and to provide the robot with an easy docking option.
Important criteria for the location of the charging station:
- Firm, level surface: The station should be placed on a level surface so that the robot can move in easily.
- Free area in front of the station: ECOVACS recommends a minimum 1.5 meter long, straight driveway for error-free docking movement.
- Rain-protected location: The charging station is weatherproof, but a location under a roof overhang or in an optional garage will extend its service life.
- Near a socket outlet: The power supply unit must be connected to a permanently installed external socket outlet. Extension cables should be avoided.
Once the optimum location had been determined, I fixed the charging station in place with the ground anchors. These were hammered into the ground to anchor the station securely.
2. set up RTK station
The RTK station ensures precise navigation of the robot and is therefore one of the most important components. It receives GPS signals and transmits correction data to the robotic lawnmower to enable centimeter-accurate navigation.
Important criteria for the location of the RTK station:
- Clear view of the sky: The RTK station requires a clear view of the sky so that it can receive stable GPS signals. Buildings, trees or high hedges in the immediate vicinity can interfere with the signal.
- No metal structures in the vicinity: Metal can reflect the GPS signals and lead to inaccuracies in the position determination.
- Minimum distance to the charging station: Due to the specified cable lengths between the charging station and the RTK station, the station cannot be positioned completely freely. The RTK station therefore had to be positioned within the cable length, but still at an optimal point for GPS reception.
- Ground anchor for a stable hold: The RTK station is fixed with a ground spike to anchor it securely in the ground even in strong winds.
After choosing the location, I connected the RTK station to the charging station and attached the ground spike to the ground. The cable routing between the two units was simple, but required careful placement to find the ideal compromise between power supply and optimal GPS reception.
Duration of the assembly
The entire installation – from selecting the location and fixing the charging station to positioning the RTK station – took less than 15 minutes. After connecting the power supply, the system was immediately ready for use.
App setup & connection with the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK is controlled and configured via the ECOVACS HOME app, which I already use to control our ECOVACS DEEBOT. As with the robot vacuum, this enables the initial set-up, mapping, control and monitoring of the robotic lawnmower directly via the smartphone.
Setup in various smart home apps is also possible – even though I have only been able to integrate the DEEBOT into my Home Assistant so far.

WLAN reception at the charging station – why is it important?
WLAN reception plays an important role when using the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK. It is crucial that the charging station has a stable WLAN connection – but not the entire garden.
- Why WLAN at the charging station?
- The charging station is the central communication point for the robotic lawnmower. It transmits status data, receives software updates and enables remote control via the app.
- Without a stable WLAN connection at the charging station, connection interruptions or delays in the control system may occur.
- Why is WLAN not necessary in the entire garden?
- The robotic lawnmower navigates autonomously with RTK and LiDAR, without requiring a permanent WLAN connection.
- As soon as the GOAT A1600 RTK leaves the charging station, the connection to the RTK station is maintained so that it can continue to navigate accurately.
- Comprehensive WLAN coverage is therefore not necessary as long as the base station is well connected.
Duration of the facility
The entire initial installation and connection of the robot to the app usually takes less than 2 minutes. Once setup is complete, the robotic lawnmower can start mapping the garden straight away.
- Präzise Lidar-unterstützte RTK + Vision Navigation: Der Roboter erreicht eine ultra-präzise Positionierung von nur 2cm. Functions and use of the ECOVACS HOME app
The ECOVACS HOME app is the central control unit for the GOAT A1600 RTK. It not only enables initial setup and connection, but also mapping of the garden, mowing planning, live view of the camera and many other functions.
The app can be used to define different mowing zones, set virtual restricted areas and program individual mowing times. Particularly important is the mapping, which helps the robot to orient itself precisely without a boundary wire.
Mapping the garden
The GOAT A1600 RTK offers two different mapping methods:
- Automatic mapping – The robot scans the garden independently and creates a map.
- Manual mapping – The user drives the robot through the garden using the app and defines the mowing areas.
1. automatic mapping – step by step
Automatic mapping is suitable for clear, well-defined lawn areas with clear transitions to other areas such as paths or flower beds.
This is how it works:
- Start the Automatic mapping function in the ECOVACS HOME app.
- The robot moves a short distance out of the charging station and starts scanning the surroundings.
- With the help of a camera, RTK and LiDAR, it automatically recognizes the lawn boundaries.
- The GOAT A1600 RTK systematically scans the area and creates a precise map.
- Once mapping is complete, the map can be checked and saved in the app.
Note: Automatic mapping works particularly well if the lawn boundaries are clearly demarcated from other areas by color (e.g. green lawn next to light-colored gravel path).
2. manual mapping – step by step
Manual mapping is particularly helpful for complex gardens, winding areas or areas with unclear lawn boundaries.
This is how it works:
- Select the Manual mapping function in the ECOVACS HOME app.
- Allow the robotic lawnmower to leave the charging station.
- Use the controls in the app to guide the robot along the desired boundaries.
- During the journey, the app draws an exact map of the garden.
- After completion, the map can be checked, adjusted and saved.
Note: If the robot moves too far away from the lawn during mapping, virtual boundaries can be set in the app to restrict the mowing area.
Additional functions in the app
In addition to mapping, the app offers other useful functions:
- Live view of the camera – Enables direct observation of the surroundings from the robot’s perspective.
- Real-time control – The robot can be moved manually via the app.
- Virtual exclusion zones – areas such as flower beds or freshly sown areas can be specifically excluded.
- Set mowing schedules – Individual schedules can be programmed for different mowing zones.
- Security functions – PIN lock, alarm on lifting and animal protection times can be set.
The ECOVACS HOME app makes controlling the GOAT A1600 RTK particularly flexible and allows you to precisely adapt the mowing behavior to your own garden.
Mowing quality & practical test – How does the GOAT perform?
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK sets new standards in automated lawn care with its double blade technology, RTK-controlled navigation and flexible edge mowing modes. In my extensive test, the robotic lawnmower impressed with its precise mowing strategy, high area coverage and reliable off-road capability.
Technical specifications and their effects
- Mowing capacity: 400 m² per hour
The GOAT A1600 RTK works efficiently and mows systematically in orderly paths. Compared to randomly navigating robotic lawnmowers, every area of the garden is evenly covered without individual areas being mowed too often or too rarely. - Electric cutting height adjustment (30 – 90 mm)
The cutting height can be set directly in the app without having to manually tweak the machine. This is particularly practical if the lawn has grown a little higher after long periods of rain and you want to gradually bring it down to a lower height. - Edge mowing mode: Up to 20 cm beyond the edge of the lawn
Thanks to TrueEdge technology, the robot not only cuts within the defined mowing area, but can also extend up to 20 cm beyond the edge of the lawn if required to ensure a clean finish.
A comparison of the different edge mowing modes
The GOAT A1600 RTK offers different edge mowing modes that can be selected via the ECOVACS HOME app:
- Normal edge mowing
- The robot orients itself to the defined boundary and cuts precisely along the lawn.
- Ideal for precisely defined lawns with hard edges, e.g. along paving stones or kerbs.
- Overlapping edge mowing (+20 cm)
- The robot moves slightly beyond the edge of the lawn to capture even the last blades outside the defined zone.
- Particularly useful for lawn edges directly adjacent to beds or open areas where additional trimming should no longer be necessary.
- No edge mowing
- The robot ignores the edge area and only works within the mowing area.
- Useful if sensitive plants or beds border directly on the mowing edge.
In my test, I used the 20 cm overlap mode. This meant that the edge was cut very cleanly without me having to rework it with a lawn trimmer.
Gradients & navigation
ECOVACS states that the GOAT A1600 RTK can handle gradients of up to 50 % (27°), which makes it suitable for demanding properties with slopes.
As I don’t have such steep terrain in my garden, I couldn’t check this information directly. However, the robot mastered my existing slopes without any problems.
It was particularly impressive that it didn’t get stuck even on wet, soft ground. Thanks to the powerful drive motor and the coarse tire tread, the robot had stable traction even in difficult situations, such as sloping hedges or slightly muddy ground.
Another advantage is the precise control in narrow passages and winding gardens. Thanks to RTK and LiDAR-supported navigation, the robotic lawnmower moves precisely along the defined paths, without unnecessary changes of direction or inefficient overlaps.
The mowing pattern – Why is no area left unmown?
In contrast to classic robot mowers with a chaos principle, the GOAT A1600 RTK follows a systematic mowing strategy. This means that no area remains unmown, as the robot follows its paths with a 50% overlap.
The mowing direction can also be adjusted in the app. This has the following effects:
- Parallel to the long side of the lawn → Reduces the number of turns and ensures an even mowing pattern.
- Diagonal mowing direction → Particularly helpful in irregularly cut gardens to compensate for different grass growth directions.
Two cutting discs instead of one – advantages of TrueEdge technology
One major difference to many other robotic lawnmowers, especially the Gardena Sileno+, is the double-blade cutting system. While the Gardena only uses a single rotating disk with three blades, the GOAT A1600 RTK uses two independent cutting disks equipped with several floating blades.
This design has several advantages:
- Uniform cut across the entire width of 33 cm.
- Better adaptation to uneven surfaces, as the two cutting discs move independently of each other.
- Improved edge mowing performance, as one cutting disc can work specifically on the edge of the lawn while the other covers the area.
Thanks to the TrueEdge function, the robot was able to mow the edges much more cleanly in my test than my old Gardena Sileno, which often left a narrow strip of grass at the edges.
Cutting pattern – Why are there light and dark mowing stripes?
During the test, I noticed that the GOAT A1600 RTK leaves a very even cutting pattern with clear mowing stripes. These light and dark stripes are caused by the direction of travel of the robotic lawnmower:
- Bright stripes → The grass is pressed in one direction so that the blades reflect the light more strongly.
- Dark stripes → The grass is pushed in the opposite direction, causing it to reflect less light.
This pattern is familiar from professionally maintained sports fields or golf courses. As the robotic lawnmower travels in orderly paths with slightly overlapping tracks, this pattern is maintained even after several mowing sessions.
Conclusion on mowing quality
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK delivers a consistently clean, precise and even mowing performance.
- Systematic navigation means that no area remains unmown.
- The cutting height can be flexibly adjusted.
- The double-blade cutting system ensures an even cut quality.
- The edge mowing mode cuts cleanly along paths and lawn edges.
- The robot also works reliably on slopes or damp ground.
The combination of RTK-controlled navigation, powerful drive, flexible cutting height adjustment and edge mowing modes makes the GOAT A1600 RTK a real alternative to classic robotic lawn mowers with boundary wires.

Safety of the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK – protection for people, animals and objects
A robotic lawnmower offers many advantages in automated lawn care, but also poses certain risks if it is not equipped with sufficient safety mechanisms. When using such a device, people, pets and objects in the garden must be taken into account.
Possible risks of a robotic lawnmower
- Danger to children and animals:
Robotic mowers are equipped with rotating blades that reach high speeds during operation. Small animals in particular, such as hedgehogs, rabbits or cats, could be at risk if they are overlooked or not recognized in time. - Damage to objects:
Garden hoses, toys lying around or small obstacles on the lawn cannot be detected by conventional robotic lawnmowers and can therefore be damaged. - Collisions with garden furniture or obstacles:
If a robotic lawnmower does not have precise obstacle detection, it could run into solid objects such as flower pots, garden benches or trees.
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK has been equipped with a wide range of safety functions to minimize precisely these risks.
Safety features of the ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK
- AI-supported obstacle detection with camera and 3D ToF sensors
- The robot recognizes fixed and moving objects in its environment.
- With the help of its camera and 3D ToF (Time-of-Flight) sensors, it can identify obstacles at an early stage and react accordingly.
- The robot slows down, stops and avoids obstacles.
- Animal welfare function & protection times
- Animal protection times can be activated in the ECOVACS HOME app. This ensures that the robot does not move at certain times – especially at dusk and at night.
- This reduces the risk for nocturnal animals such as hedgehogs, frogs or other small animals that often spend time in the grass.
- Automatic emergency shutdown when lifting or tilting
- As soon as the robotic lawnmower is lifted or tilted sharply, the blades stop immediately.
- This prevents injuries if someone lifts the robot during operation.
- Soft-touch collision sensors
- If the robot encounters an obstacle, it stops immediately and changes direction.
- This not only protects the robotic lawnmower itself, but also garden furniture or play equipment on the lawn.
- PIN code lock & theft protection
- The robotic lawnmower is secured with a PIN code system. The robot cannot be started without the correct code.
- It also triggers an alarm in the event of unauthorized lifting to prevent theft.
Practical test – Does the GOAT A1600 RTK detect small obstacles?
To test the obstacle detection, I laid out a green garden hose on my green lawn. Many robotic lawnmowers have difficulty distinguishing such objects from the grass, as they hardly stand out in color.
The result:
- The GOAT A1600 RTK reliably detected the garden hose with its AI camera and ToF sensors.
- The robot braked, stopped and drove back carefully without running over or damaging the hose.
- After reversing, he drove safely around the area and continued mowing.
The ECOVACS GOAT A1600 RTK offers a high level of safety thanks to its AI-supported obstacle detection, automatic emergency shutdown and animal protection mode. In contrast to many conventional robotic lawn mowers with boundary wire, which often only rely on impact sensors, the GOAT A1600 RTK detects obstacles in advance and reacts accordingly.
A particularly positive feature was that the robot also reliably detected and drove around small, hard-to-see objects on the lawn. This not only reduces the risk to animals and objects, but also prevents damage to the robot itself.
