Firmware updates: Improve functionality and security for Reolink cameras
Firmware updates are critical for Reolink surveillance cameras, NVR and Home Hub to ensure full functionality and security. Regular updates close security gaps, improve performance and activate new functions.
What is firmware and what tasks does it perform?
Firmware is special software that is installed directly on the hardware of a device. It controls basic functions and ensures that the device works properly. In contrast to regular programs, the firmware is deeply integrated into the system and enables communication between the hardware and other software components.
For example, the firmware of a Reolink camera regulates how image and video data is processed and transmitted. It determines how the camera reacts to control commands, for example for night vision switching, zoom or motion detection.
Firmware updates are therefore crucial to ensure that new security protocols, compatibility improvements and optimizations are integrated. Bug fixes and performance improvements are typical components of such updates that potentially improve the use of Reolink cameras. For wired PoE cameras and the WLAN variants with a power connection, it is possible to update the firmware manually. This is done either via the Reolink app or the Reolink client on the PC. For most wireless battery cameras, however, Reolink handles the update centrally.
The Reolink Client can be downloaded free of charge for PC and Mac directly from the Reolink Download Center. The Reolink app is available to download for iOS in the App Store and for Android in the Google Play Store.
If you want to get the most out of your surveillance technology, you should regularly check the current firmware version and download and install new updates if necessary. This increases stability and prevents potential security risks due to outdated software.
Why a manual firmware update may be necessary
Reolink devices such as cameras, the NVR or the Home Hub offer the option of automatic firmware updates. However, it can happen that these automatic updates do not work as intended. This can be caused by a faulty Internet connection, problems with the Reolink server or errors in an existing firmware version. In such cases, a manual update is required to close security gaps, optimize functions and restore the stability of the device.
In particular, if there are problems with the function of cameras – e.g. delayed notifications, faulty night vision or compatibility problems – you should check whether the current firmware version is out of date. This mainly affects wired PoE cameras and WLAN variants with a power connection, where manual updates are possible via the app or the client.
To check the automatic update settings, go to Settings -> System -> Maintenance -> Firmware Update. There you will find the “Auto Update” option, which can either be activated or deactivated. If the automatic update is deactivated or does not work reliably, problems may occur when receiving new firmware versions.
The “Check online update for the latest version” function is also available in this menu. It can be used to manually test whether a new firmware version is available from the settings. However, this function does not always work reliably. It often indicates that no new version is available, although a more up-to-date firmware has already been made available on the official website in the Reolink Download Center.
I therefore recommend regularly visiting the Download Center website to download the latest firmware version for the respective device.
Keep Reolink cameras up to date with the Home Assistant
I have integrated my Reolink cameras into my Home Assistant. The Home Assistant is an open source platform for home automation that makes it possible to centrally control and monitor numerous smart devices from different manufacturers. The integration of the Reolink cameras offers me a variety of possibilities, such as retrieving live streams, controlling the camera settings and using automations, e.g. activating notifications or switching on night vision based on certain conditions.
The Home Assistant regularly checks the firmware versions of all integrated devices and indicates whether new updates are available. This means that I am informed in good time about missing firmware updates, including for my Reolink cameras. This function has already helped me to keep devices up to date and ensure that my monitoring technology is always working optimally.

Step-by-step guide: Performing a Reolink firmware update
1. check the firmware version of the Reolink camera
To see if an update is necessary, I start by checking the current firmware of my camera. In the Reolink client on the PC, I can find the information in the user interface in the camera settings in the System menu -> Info. Alternatively, this can also be accessed via the Reolink app.
This menu displays important information about the camera, including the current firmware version, the camera model, the hardware number, the configuration version and other details. On some devices, this information can be found under Device -> Info. This data is essential to select the correct firmware version in the Reolink Download Center and to avoid possible compatibility problems.
2. find firmware in the Reolink download center
Next, I go to the Reolink website and navigate to the download center. The quick link to the German version is https://reolink.com/de/download-center/.
I enter the name of my camera there. The live search suggests suitable camera models as I type. I click on the relevant model to go to the next selection.
The next step is to confirm the correct hardware number. Reolink provides a selection list for this purpose. After confirmation, an overview of the available firmware versions is displayed. In addition to the respective firmware number, I can also see the release date.
The overview also contains information on the changes and improvements provided by the respective firmware version. These can include optimizations of the network connection, bug fixes or new functions. Checking this information helps you to decide whether an update is necessary for the device in question.
3. download and unzip the firmware
The firmware file is downloaded in ZIP format. After the download I unzip the file. A suitable program is required for unpacking, such as 7-Zip, which can be downloaded free of charge here.
I recommend unpacking the file into a separate folder within the download folder. This way, all unzipped files – the .pak file, the PDF instructions and possibly an additional version file – are quickly available and there is no risk of confusion. The PDF instructions usually explain the next steps for the update.
4. install firmware manually
In the Reolink client, I go back to the Maintenance menu and start the update process. I can select the correct file on my computer using the “Browse” button. In the selection window, I navigate to the previously created folder containing the unzipped files from the ZIP archive. I select the .pak file and start the update.
I am then asked if I want to reset the camera during the update. I usually leave the existing settings unchanged as I want to continue using them. A reset would reset all user-defined settings such as network settings, motion detection zones and notifications to the factory settings, which means additional configuration effort.
However, a reset may be useful if the camera repeatedly malfunctions, no longer responds properly to commands or if there are massive configuration errors. It is also advisable to reset the camera before selling or passing it on. This removes all personal data, saved passwords and network settings. This prevents third parties from accessing old configurations or using sensitive data. A reset ensures that the new owner can set up the camera in a neutral state.
After the upload, the firmware upgrade begins, which can take a few minutes depending on the size of the file. At the end, the process is confirmed by a success message and the camera restarts automatically. This completes the manual firmware update successfully.
