In the following, I will go into more detail about the specifications and describe them in more detail.
This camera is primarily aimed at the consumer market and is ideal for use in private homes or small businesses.
If you are looking for a professional surveillance solution, you might find more functions in higher-priced professional models.
Nevertheless, the camera offers an impressive combination of modern technology and simple operation that covers many requirements in the consumer segment.
4K Ultra HD and ColorX night vision
With its 4K resolution, the camera delivers razor-sharp images at a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This high level of detail is a great advantage both in daylight and in the dark.
Particularly impressive is the ColorX night vision technology, which enables colorful night shots even in minimal light. This means that black and white images at night are a thing of the past and clear, color images are possible without additional lighting – a big plus for surveillance in low light conditions.
360° auto-tracking and PIR sensor
The camera has a 360° pan and tilt function that enables complete monitoring of the surroundings.
With auto-tracking, the camera automatically tracks every movement of people or vehicles in its field of view. This uses the PIR sensor, which detects movements within a radius of up to 10 meters and reduces false alarms by ignoring unimportant movements such as those of small animals or objects.
Installation and accessories: Easy handling
The Reolink Altas PT Ultra is powered by a 20,000 mAh battery that offers an impressive standby time of up to 16 months.
For longer use, the camera can also be operated via a solar panel, which is included in the accessories. This saves energy and makes the camera particularly sustainable. The camera is available both as a bundle with the solar panel and individually.
If you want to use the camera for longer periods without manual charging, you should choose the right package with a solar panel. It should be noted that the cable of the solar panel is about 4 meters long, which should be taken into account when placing it.
The accessories include:
- Solar panel
- Mounting material (screws, USB cable)
- Operating instructions and drilling template
Wireless use and easy setup
Thanks to its wireless operation, the camera can be installed almost anywhere.
Setup is quick and easy via the Reolink app. Functions such as auto-tracking, motion detection and many other settings can be customized in the app.
I will describe details of the set-up in the following text.
- Plug-and-Play: Der Unmanaged Switch erweitert Ihr Netzwerk sofort.
Smart detection and continuous recording
The Reolink Altas PT Ultra offers intelligent detection for people, vehicles and animals.
This Smart Detection function ensures that the camera distinguishes between relevant and irrelevant movements, which significantly reduces the number of false alarms.
In combination with the integrated auto-tracking, every movement always remains in the camera’s field of vision and is reliably tracked.
Continuous recording and pre-recording
A particularly practical feature is the continuous recording function. The camera can record up to 12 hours a day for up to 8 days on a single battery charge.
However, this function was not yet available at the time of my test. In order to be able to use continuous recording, an update of the client and the app is required, which had not yet been released at the time of the test. As soon as this update is available, the camera should fully support the function.
Another highlight is the pre-recording. The first 10 seconds before motion is detected are also recorded so that no important moments are missed.
Storage options: SD card and Reolink Home Hub
The camera’s recordings can be saved flexibly.
The camera has a microSD card slot that supports memory cards with a capacity of up to 512 GB. Alternatively, the camera can also be integrated into the Reolink Home Hub, which even offers up to 16 TB of storage space in the Pro version.
In the Reolink Home Hub: Central Storage & Surveillance Center review, I described the NVR’s features in detail, as well as the benefits of centralized camera management and support for Reolink battery-powered cameras.
Unfortunately, integration into the RLN36 NVR or other network video recorders with a built-in hard disk and various additional connections is not yet possible, as the battery models are not supported by the NVRs.
Altas PT Ultra vs. TrackMix PoE vs. RLC-1212A
Impressive picture quality
The Reolink Altas PT Ultra delivers outstanding images in both daylight and darkness.
Thanks to the 4K Ultra HD resolution, the images are razor-sharp, and the ColorX night vision enables colorful night shots, even in low light. This offers a considerable advantage over conventional black and white night vision cameras, as vivid colors remain visible even at night.
ColorX technology uses ambient light to create colorful images at dusk and at night. My test showed that the color night vision was particularly impressive at dusk, as there was enough residual light.
In complete darkness, however, a light source is required for the ColorX technology to function optimally. In very dark environments, the camera did not deliver the desired results, and here the infrared images from my Reolink RLC-1212A proved to be much more convincing, even if they are in black and white.
As I have installed the three camera models Altas PT Ultra, TrackMix PoE and Reolink RLC-1212A relatively close to each other on my test site, the image quality of these surveillance cameras can be easily compared with each other.
In the following, I will briefly introduce the Reolink TrackMix PoE and the Reolink RLC-1212A and compare them with the Altas PT Ultra.
Reolink TrackMix PoE
The Reolink TrackMix PoE is a dual-lens camera that relies on PoE (Power over Ethernet). It offers two lenses – a wide-angle lens and a telephoto lens – which make it possible to capture both close-ups and more distant details at the same time. This improves monitoring in larger areas.
- Resolution: 4K Ultra HD (3840 x 2160 pixels)
- Dual lens system: Combines wide-angle and telephoto for better detail accuracy
- Auto-tracking: automatic tracking of people and vehicles
- PoE: power and data transmission via a single Ethernet cable
Advantages of the Reolink TrackMix PoE
- Dual-lens technology: captures both wide scenes and detailed close-ups.
- PoE connection: More stable and faster data transmission without the need for batteries or solar panels.
- Excellent auto-tracking: tracks objects precisely and ensures that no details are lost.
Disadvantages of the Reolink TrackMix PoE
- No wireless operation: reliance on PoE cabling, which limits installation flexibility.
- Larger design: The dual lens makes the camera larger and more eye-catching.
Reolink RLC-1212A
The Reolink RLC-1212A is a 12 MP PoE camera with particularly high resolution that specializes in detailed surveillance recordings. It delivers particularly sharp images and uses infrared night vision, which enables clear black and white images in absolute darkness.
- Resolution: 12 MP (4000 x 3000 pixels)
- Infrared night vision: Supports black and white recordings in complete darkness
- PoE connection: power and data transmission via an Ethernet cable
- Advanced motion detection: distinguishes between people and vehicles
Advantages of the Reolink RLC-1212A
- Extremely high resolution: 12 MP ensure particularly detailed images that offer more image information than 4K.
- Infrared night vision: Very powerful in complete darkness, where color night vision no longer works.
- PoE technology: Stable connection and power supply via a single cable.
Disadvantages of the Reolink RLC-1212A
- Black and white night vision: No color night shots, unlike the ColorX technology of the Altas PT Ultra.
- Limited installation flexibility: Like the TrackMix, the RLC-1212A relies on PoE cabling.
Specification | Altas PT Ultra | TrackMix PoE | RLC-1212A |
Resolution | 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) | 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) | 12 MP (4000 x 3000 pixels) |
Night vision | ColorX (Colored) | Infrared (black and white) | Infrared (black and white) |
Operation | Battery + solar | PoE | PoE |
Auto-Tracking | Yes | Yes | No |
Special feature | 360° swivel tilt | Dual lens | High 12 MP resolution |
Conclusion: advantages and disadvantages of the models in comparison
- The Altas PT Ultra scores points with its wireless operation and ColorX night vision, which enables it to deliver colorful images even in dimly lit environments. With its 360° pan and tilt function, it is also particularly flexible.
- The TrackMix PoE offers clear advantages for monitoring larger areas thanks to its dual-lens system, but cannot be operated wirelessly as it relies on PoE. In addition, night vision is only available in black and white in complete darkness.
- The RLC-1212A delivers the highest resolution of the three cameras, which is particularly important for detailed surveillance recordings. However, the camera also relies on PoE cabling and does not offer color night vision.
Comparison of image quality at twilight
In twilight, the Altas PT Ultra fully exploits the advantages of ColorX technology. Colors are clearly recognizable and objects can be precisely identified.
In the test, the TrackMix PoE switched to the day view shortly beforehand, which also provides a colored view. When comparing the two images, it is noticeable that the TrackMix PoE provides a significantly larger image section thanks to the additional wide-angle lens.
In contrast, the Reolink RLC-1212A was still in black and white night mode at the same time. The surroundings are illuminated using infrared light, and the camera can also deliver razor-sharp images at night thanks to its 12 MP resolution.
One disadvantage of the infrared lights of both the TrackMix PoE and the Reolink RLC-1212A is that they attract many flying insects.
Insects are attracted to infrared rays because they are more sensitive to the higher frequencies of the light spectrum. These wavelengths are invisible to humans, but can be perceived by many insects, which attracts them towards the light source.
This not only leads to an increased number of insects in the camera images, but also to another problem: spiders take advantage of this favorable situation and build their webs directly in front of the cameras to catch the insects more easily.
The heat emitted by the cameras and the infrared lights further intensifies this effect.
In practice, I therefore had to clean the TrackMix PoE and the RLC-1212A much more frequently, as the cobwebs often obstructed my view.
The Altas PT Ultra was largely spared this problem, as it does not use infrared radiation, but uses ColorX technology to deliver color images without additional lighting, even in low ambient light.

Comparison of image quality at night
For night shots, the quality of the Reolink Altas PT Ultra’s color images still depends heavily on an additional light source.
In absolute darkness, unfortunately, nothing can be seen of a full-color night view. Instead, I could only see image noise with isolated colored areas.
The Reolink TrackMix PoE and the Reolink RLC-1212A impress here thanks to their infrared lighting and black and white view. The RLC-1212A in particular delivers razor-sharp images at night thanks to its 12 MP resolution.
However, as soon as a light source comes into play, the color night vision of the Altas PT Ultra is fully available again.
The camera has its own LED spotlights, which provide sufficient illumination for the full-color night view with moderate room depth and good reflection of the light on surfaces.
In the test, the Altas PT Ultra also proved to be less susceptible to backlighting, direct glare or infrared reflections.
With cameras such as the TrackMix PoE and the RLC-1212A, which rely on infrared night vision, backlighting or targeted glare can significantly impair the image quality. This is because the infrared sensors are particularly sensitive to bright light in the near-infrared range.
If a strong light source is directed at the camera, the infrared beam is either reflected or scattered, resulting in overexposure and glare. This makes the image brighter and less clear, and in extreme cases the camera can temporarily go “blind” if the light reaches the entire lens.
Infrared reflections caused by smooth surfaces such as glass or shiny materials are particularly problematic. The camera’s infrared rays are reflected back and interfere with the sensor data, resulting in blurred or even unusable images.
Such effects occur more frequently with cameras with infrared night vision.
Possible countermeasures
- Optimal positioning of the camera: Cameras should be positioned so that no light sources shine directly into the lens. Particular attention should be paid to reflective surfaces such as windows or metal surfaces near the camera, especially with infrared cameras.
- Use glare protection: The use of anti-glare devices or special housings can help to shield direct light sources and avoid glare.
- Adjust infrared radiation: Some camera models offer the option of adjusting the strength of the infrared lighting or switching it off completely in problematic areas. This can help to reduce reflections.
- Install additional light sources: By installing additional light sources outside the camera’s field of view, better illumination can be achieved without the camera being disturbed by infrared light.
In the test, the Altas PT Ultra proved to be more resistant to glare and backlighting, as it primarily relies on ColorX technology and additional LED spotlights instead of infrared light.
With the TrackMix PoE and RLC-1212A, these effects can strongly influence the image, especially with targeted light sources that can temporarily “blind” the cameras.

Time-lapse and 360° all-round monitoring
Another impressive feature of the camera is the time-lapse function, which makes it possible to monitor long periods of time and display them in shortened videos.
The 360° all-round surveillance in combination with auto-tracking ensures that no area remains unobserved, while the camera automatically adapts to moving objects and tracks them.
The Reolink TrackMix PoE also offers strong surveillance capabilities with its dual-lens technology, especially in tracking and the combination of wide-angle and telephoto lens for more precise shots.
In contrast to the Altas PT Ultra, which relies on a lens, the TrackMix enables even more detailed detection of moving objects.
Both cameras have auto-tracking and night vision, but the TrackMix also scores with its dual camera function, which is an advantage for larger surveillance areas.
Further details on the differences and similarities can be found in my article Reolink TrackMix PoE – Dual lens surveillance camera in test.
Weatherproof and solar-powered: Suitable for outdoor use
The Reolink Altas PT Ultra is IP65 certified and therefore weatherproof, making it ideal for outdoor use. It can easily withstand rain, dust and extreme temperatures.
IP65 means that the camera is fully protected against the ingress of dust and can also withstand water jets from all directions. This protection class makes the camera ideal for outdoor installations, whether on house walls, under roofs or in the garden.
A particular highlight of the camera is the integrated 20,000 mAh battery, which offers a runtime of up to 16 months on a single charge – depending on usage.
In my test, it was not necessary to recharge the camera, even with intensive use. Despite a 6-hour continuous recording at night during a time-lapse recording, I was unable to reduce the battery level below 95%.
This makes the camera extremely reliable, even for longer shots or in hard-to-reach areas where regular charging would be impractical.
Thanks to solar operation, the running time of the camera can even be extended.
The solar panel has an output of 6 watts and is sufficient to charge the camera for 24 hours of operation with just 10 minutes of sunlight per day. With the 4 meter long cable, the solar panel offers sufficient flexibility for installation.
I recommend installing the solar panel in a sunny location to achieve maximum efficiency.
If the solar panel is not used, charging via the USB-C port is also possible, although this will rarely be necessary in many cases thanks to the outstanding battery life.
For installation, I recommend mounting the camera in a location that offers optimal access to sunlight.
Locations with a southern orientation or open areas without obstacles such as trees or roofs are ideal for maximizing the charging power of the solar panel.

Comparison of the Reolink cameras: Altas PT Ultra and Argus 4 Pro
The Reolink Argus 4 Pro also offers 4K image quality and is suitable as a possible alternative to the Altas PT Ultra. It is particularly interesting for those who are looking for a wireless surveillance camera.
Both cameras have similar functions, but there are differences that make them attractive for different areas of application.
Advantages of the Reolink Argus 4 Pro:
- Wireless freedom: The Argus 4 Pro is completely wireless and does not require a power cable or solar panel, which makes installation flexible.
- Compact design: The smaller and more inconspicuous design facilitates installation in less visible areas.
- Color night vision with spotlight: Unlike the ColorX technology of the Altas PT Ultra, the Argus 4 Pro uses an integrated spotlight to enable color night shots in complete darkness.
Disadvantages of the Argus 4 Pro:
- No 360° auto-tracking: In contrast to the Altas PT Ultra, the Argus 4 Pro lacks the 360° pan and tilt function as well as auto-tracking. The field of view is therefore static and cannot track moving objects.
- Smaller battery capacity: The Argus 4 Pro has a smaller battery, which is discharged more quickly, especially when using the spotlight.
Advantages of the Reolink Altas PT Ultra:
- 360° auto-tracking: The Altas PT Ultra offers all-round surveillance and can automatically track people or vehicles in the field of view.
- Extremely long battery life: With a 20,000 mAh battery, the camera can run for up to 16 months in standby mode. Even with intensive use, the battery level remained stable during the test.
- Color night vision without external light: Thanks to ColorX technology, color images are produced even in low light without the need for a spotlight.
Disadvantages of the Altas PT Ultra:
- Larger design: Due to the larger battery capacity and the 360° tracking system, the Altas PT Ultra is significantly larger and requires more space for installation.
- Higher price: The additional functions and larger battery capacity make the Altas PT Ultra more expensive than the Argus 4 Pro.
The Altas PT Ultra is ideal for users who require 360° monitoring and a longer battery life. The Argus 4 Pro, on the other hand, is a good choice for a more compact, wireless solution with excellent color night vision. Both cameras offer powerful functions, but differ in terms of flexibility and features.

Summary and conclusion
The blog post offers a detailed comparison of the three surveillance cameras Reolink Altas PT Ultra, TrackMix PoE and RLC-1212A.
The Altas PT Ultra impresses with a 4K Ultra HD resolution, ColorX technology for colorful night shots and a 360° auto-tracking function, making it a versatile solution for outdoor use. Their battery life of up to 16 months, supplemented by solar operation, offers maximum flexibility without constant recharging.
The Reolink TrackMix PoE features a dual-lens system and PoE technology, allowing it to cover wide surveillance areas. Their disadvantage, however, is their dependence on a cable connection.
In comparison, the RLC-1212A impresses with a 12 MP resolution and razor-sharp infrared night vision images, but is more suitable for static installations due to its PoE cabling and lack of color night vision.
The article also compares the image quality of the cameras at dusk and at night. The Altas PT Ultra performs well in residual light, but requires an additional light source in complete darkness.
In contrast, the TrackMix PoE and RLC-1212A provide sharp black and white images thanks to their infrared night vision, but attract more insects, which leads to more frequent cleaning requirements.
The Altas PT Ultra is described as a flexible all-round camera, while the TrackMix PoE and RLC-1212A have their strengths in larger surveillance areas and detailed night shots.
