Setting up the camera on the client and in the app
Setting up the Reolink Duo 3 WLAN is easy and can be done both via the Reolink app and via the Reolink client on a PC or Mac. Here are detailed instructions:
1. setup via the Reolink app
- Connect the power supply: Connect the camera to the power supply unit or extension cable.
- Scan the QR code: Open the Reolink app (available for iOS and Android), select “Add camera” and scan the QR code on the camera.
- Set up the WLAN connection: Select the WLAN network (2.4 GHz or 5 GHz) and enter the password. The camera connects automatically and saves the access data.
- Adjustment of the settings:
- Define movement zones to monitor only relevant areas.
- Activate push notifications that inform you when motion is detected.
- Adjust picture quality to choose between maximum resolution and optimized bandwidth.
- Access live view and recorded clips via the app.
- Optimize intelligent detection to reduce false alarms. Person, vehicle and animal detection can be customized.
2. setup via the Reolink client
- Establish the connection: Connect the camera to the router via LAN cable if the WLAN setup is to be carried out via the client.
- Start client: Download, install and start the Reolink client for Windows or macOS.
- Add camera: The camera is automatically recognized in the network. Set a start password and enter the WLAN access data.
- Check the network: Remove the LAN cable after a successful connection. The camera now runs wirelessly via WLAN.

- Central dashboard: By combining cameras and other smart home devices in Home Assistant, a personalized dashboard can be created that clearly displays live images, alarms and device status.

With a 16 megapixel ultra HD resolution and a 180° panoramic view, they deliver razor-sharp images with no blind spots. The dual-lens technology ensures that details are retained even at the edges of the image and prevents the distortion that often occurs with wide-angle shots.
Image quality in daylight
In daylight, the camera delivers brilliant, highly detailed images. The color reproduction is natural and precise, so that even the smallest objects or movements are clearly visible. Thanks to the high resolution, even distant details such as license plates, faces or other critical information are easily visible.

At night, the camera’s infrared LEDs and optional LED spotlight are used. Both technologies enable razor-sharp images, with the choice between infrared and color night vision depending on individual requirements:
- Infrared night vision: The camera delivers black and white images that remain clear and detailed up to a distance of 30 meters. I prefer the infrared night vision without spotlight, as the transition between day and night mode is seamless and doesn’t cause any additional delays. The switching time with subsequent image build-up is completely eliminated, which makes monitoring more effective, especially in the event of sudden movements in the field of view.
- Color night vision with spotlight: The LED spotlight ensures colorful images at night. This is particularly useful for recognizing objects in their natural colours or for better identifying unknown people or vehicles. However, the image is briefly rebuilt when the spotlight is activated. This process takes about 1-2 seconds, as the camera has to adjust the lighting and exposure to achieve an optimal result.

Point of criticism: Switching time when Spotlight is activated
The delay of 1-2 seconds in image formation after activation of the spotlight can be problematic in critical surveillance situations. During this period, the image may be temporarily blurred or not fully recognizable. This is particularly critical when an object or person in the scene is moving quickly, as important details may be lost in this brief moment.
This delay occurs because the camera automatically adjusts the exposure and white balance to the new lighting conditions when the spotlight is activated. During this process, the image is updated to ensure optimum brightness and clarity.
Conclusion on night vision
The choice between infrared and color night vision depends on the requirements. Infrared night vision is ideal for continuous and uninterrupted monitoring, as there are no switching times. Color night vision with spotlight, on the other hand, is ideal for capturing color details when required, for example to identify people or vehicles. Both options complement each other and make the camera flexible for different surveillance requirements.

WLAN or PoE – which surveillance camera is better?
The choice between the Reolink Duo 3 WLAN and the Reolink Duo 3 PoE depends heavily on the requirements and the operating environment.
