X-Sense wireless smoke detectors in the test: In my multi-storey old building with thick walls, it was clear that normal smoke alarms were not enough. I installed the X-Sense Link Plus system with wirelessly networked smoke detectors and CO detectors and put it through its paces. In this article, I show how smoke detectors with wireless technology perform in practice, how the setup works with and without an app and which variant is suitable for which application scenario. Why smoke alarms are so important – function and legal basis
Today, smoke detectors are part of the basic equipment of modern safety technology in residential buildings. They detect smoke particles in the air at an early stage and warn of a potential fire hazard with a loud alarm sound. The most important function of a smoke alarm is to wake people in their sleep in good time – because in the event of a fire, it is often the smoke, not the flames, that poses the greatest danger.
In Germany, smoke alarms are now mandatory in all federal states. It is enshrined in the respective state building regulations and stipulates that at least one smoke alarm must be installed in bedrooms, children’s rooms and corridors leading to common rooms. This obligation applies not only to new buildings, but also to existing buildings. As a rule, the owner is responsible for installation, while regular maintenance is the responsibility of the tenant or resident – depending on state law and legislation.
A single smoke detector per floor is often not sufficient, especially in multi-storey buildings with a high degree of structural separation, such as thick ceilings or old building walls. If a device goes off in the basement, you can hardly hear it in the attic. This is exactly where networked wireless smoke detectors come into play, communicating with each other via radio and alerting all devices simultaneously in the event of an emergency.
How a smoke detector works – technology, sensors and differences
A modern smoke detector is a compact safety system that uses sensors to react to smoke development at an early stage. The most common technology in private households is optical smoke detection (also known as the photoelectric principle). Inside the smoke detector there is a light-tight chamber with an LED and a photo sensor. Under normal conditions, the light beam does not hit the sensor. However, if smoke particles enter the chamber, the light is scattered by the particles and hits the sensor – the alarm is triggered.
This technology has proven to be particularly reliable and durable and reacts quickly to smoldering fires that produce a lot of smoke but little heat. There are also smoke detectors with ionization-based detection that are particularly sensitive to open flames. However, due to the radioactive substances they contain, they are no longer widely used in Europe and are virtually non-existent in Germany.
Many smoke alarms have additional functions such as an integrated test button, status LEDs, acoustic signals when the battery is low or an automatic self-test.
Carbon monoxide detectors – lifesavers in the face of invisible danger
A CO detector (carbon monoxide detector) detects the colorless and odorless gas carbon monoxide (CO), which is produced by incomplete combustion of fossil fuels such as wood, coal, oil or diesel. CO can escape, particularly in boiler rooms, workshops or garages – for example, if the exhaust gas ducting is defective or the heating is not set correctly.
The sensor inside a CO detector is usually based on an electrochemical sensor that reacts to CO molecules. When a critical threshold value is reached – depending on the concentration and duration of exposure – a loud alarm is triggered. The limit values are based on standards such as EN 50291. Modern devices such as the combined smoke and CO detector from X-Sense not only offer dual monitoring, but also display the CO concentration in ppm (parts per million) – directly visible in the app or via an LED display.
Such a combination device is particularly useful in houses with heating systems, open fireplaces, diesel heaters or when e-bike batteries are charged indoors. Unlike smoke detectors, which primarily react to visible smoke development, CO detectors provide an early warning of invisible poisoning long before the first symptoms are noticeable.
The challenge: making smoke alarms audible throughout the house
Smoke alarms save lives – but only if the alarm is heard. With most devices, the warning is exclusively acoustic, with a penetrating, loud signal tone that typically reaches a sound pressure level of 85 dB at a distance of 3 meters. This volume is sufficient to wake you up in an apartment – provided you are close to the detector.
However, this was no longer guaranteed in my multi-storey house with solid brickwork from the turn of the century. The load-bearing walls in the basement area are up to 80 cm thick, and there is also a sub-basement that further subdivides the basement. Among other things, I operate a diesel parking heater in these rooms, which poses a particular hazard – invisible exhaust gases such as carbon monoxide (CO) could escape.
The problem: The alarm sound of a smoke alarm in the basement was no longer audible on the upper floors – even with the door open. On the top floor, where the bedrooms are located, a fire in the cellar would not have been noticed. This weakness is not an isolated case, but a typical problem in larger houses, old buildings, buildings with soundproof windows or heavily sealed-off areas such as utility rooms or workshops.
Possible solutions for comprehensive warning in the home
To ensure that a triggered alarm is audible throughout the entire building, there are several approaches with different levels of effort, cost and security:
1. use of individual, non-networked smoke detectors in each room
- Effort: Low – simple installation according to instructions
- Costs: Low (from approx. €10 per device)
- Safety: Limited – each detector only triggers locally, other residents may not hear the alarm
- Conclusion: Suitable for small apartments, but not a sufficient solution in larger houses
2. use of radio-networked smoke detectors
- Effort: Medium – detectors usually have to be networked with each other via a coupling process
- Costs: Moderate – from approx. 30-50 € per device, sets with base station from approx. 150 €
- Safety: High – if a detector triggers an alarm, all networked smoke detectors in the house emit an acoustic signal
- Conclusion: Best solution for multi-storey houses or complex floor plans
During my test with the X-Sense Link+ system, this variant proved to be a practical and reliable solution. The detectors can be connected directly to each other via radio (without an app) or alternatively controlled via a central base station and app. This enables complete wireless networking – with alarm forwarding across several floors.
3. wired fire alarm systems
- Cost: High – professional planning, laying of cables, installation by specialist company required
- Costs: Very high – several thousand euros, depending on the scope
- Security: Professional level of protection – optical, acoustic and partially automatic forwarding to emergency call centers
- Conclusion: Generally oversized and too expensive in private single-family homes
4. smart home smoke detector with WLAN/cloud connection
- Effort: Medium – integration into the WLAN, setup in the app
- Costs: Variable – devices from approx. 40 €, systems with gateway significantly more expensive
- Security: High – especially when paired with push notifications on the smartphone
- Conclusion: Convenient, but not independent of the Internet. In the event of a power failure or network problems, forwarding does not work – parallel radio networking is therefore recommended

Test and comparison of the X-Sense Link+ system
For my test, I installed the X-Sense Link+ system with a base station (model SBS50), six smoke detectors (model XS01-M) and a combination detector for smoke and carbon monoxide (model XP01-W). The system enables wireless radio networking of all detectors – even without an internet connection or cloud connection. This means that all devices in the house can be effectively networked with each other and ensure synchronized alerting across all floors in the event of an emergency.
The radio connection is based on HF communication with a long range, so that even structurally isolated areas can be covered securely. The SBS50 base station supplied, which can manage up to 50 devices simultaneously, is used to connect to the WLAN and control via app.
Available set sizes and target groups
The X-Sense Link+ system is available in several set sizes, depending on the size of the house and individual security requirements:
- Set of 3: For small apartments or individual floors (e.g. attic or extension)
- Set of 6: Ideal for detached houses or multi-storey residential units with basements and several bedrooms
- Set of 12: For large apartment buildings, old buildings with many rooms or commercial properties
The sets can be flexibly extended, e.g. with additional XS01-M smoke detectors or the XP01-W smoke and CO detector. The latter is particularly useful in rooms with combustion technology (e.g. boiler room, workshop, kitchen or garage), as it detects not only smoke but also carbon monoxide – a colorless and odorless gas that can be life-threatening.
Scope of delivery and accessories at a glance
A typical set of 6 contains:
- 1 ×SBS50 base station (white, compact, power supply via USB-C)
- 6 ×smoke detector XS01-M with permanently installed HF module
- 6 ×replaceable lithium batteries with a service life of up to 5 years

The X-Sense app in detail – control, setup and functions
The X-Sense Home Security app enables central management and monitoring of all connected detectors in the house. It is available free of charge for Android in the Google Play Store and for iOS in the Apple App Store. There is a QR code on the packaging and in the enclosed operating instructions that leads directly to the relevant app download.
Setting up the app – step by step
- Download app (Android/iOS)
- Create an account: Registration of a customer account with e-mail address and password is mandatory to connect the devices and receive notifications
- Add the base station: Select “Add device” in the app and scan the QR code on the underside of the SBS50 base station
- Connect WLAN: The base station is detected via Bluetooth, then it displays available WLAN networks – select WLAN and enter password
- Assign location and name: The base station can be named and assigned to a location (e.g. house, apartment, office)
Note: The direct pairing of smoke detectors via HF radio also works without an app and without a customer account. This option is described in a later section.
Setting up the smoke detectors in the app
Once the base station has been added, any number of compatible smoke, CO or combination detectors (up to 50 devices per station) can be connected via the app:
- Select device type (e.g. smoke detector)
- Determine model (e.g. XS01-M, XP01-W)
- Enter name and location
- Insert the battery and briefly press the test button twice
- The base station automatically detects the detector and pairs it with the app
Functions in the app
- Status display for each detector: battery level, connection and device ID at a glance
- Push notifications: Immediate notification in case of alarm, low battery or connection problem
- CO concentration in real time (XP01-W only): Display in ppm (parts per million), important for quick action in the event of gradual CO poisoning
- Activate/deactivate LED display: Ideal for bedrooms or dark rooms when no disturbing light is desired
- Trigger test alarm: Acoustic function test via the app, without manual button operation
- Adjust volume: Individualization possible depending on the room situation (e.g. workshop vs. bedroom)
- Mute in the event of a false alarm: alarm can be muted via the app – automatic reactivation after 9 seconds
- Display of the triggered detector: In the event of an alarm, the device that triggered the alarm is immediately visible – helpful for quickly locating the source of the fire
- Device sharing: control and display can be shared with other users, such as family members or roommates

Direct pairing and networking of smoke detectors – wireless networking without app and cloud
In addition to the app-controlled version, the X-Sense Link+ system also offers wireless networking that can be used completely offline. The smoke detectors communicate directly with each other – via radio frequency (RF) – without the need for the internet, a cloud or a smartphone. This option is particularly interesting for homes with poor WLAN coverage, data protection concerns or simply as a redundant security solution.
Difference between HF wireless connection and app control
The app control is based on Wi-Fi and Bluetooth communication between the smartphone, base station and cloud servers. This enables remote access, push notifications and extended functions – but only with an active internet connection.
In contrast, the directly coupled smoke detectors work via an internal HF radio protocol (high frequency, approx. 868 MHz ISM band). This connection is independent of the Internet, saves energy and has a much greater range than conventional Bluetooth.

- No app or cloud required
- No registration necessary
- Also works in the event of a power or internet failure
- Robust and fail-safe communication
- Perfect for large houses, garden sheds, basements or secluded areas
- Restrictions:
- No notifications on the smartphone
- No live status available
- No remote control or app logging
How coupling via HF radio works
Setting up the wireless network is simple and can be done directly on the device – without an app or base station. This creates a group of smoke detectors that are networked with each other. If one detector is triggered, all the others are automatically activated as well.
Step-by-step guide to HF coupling:
- Set master device:
Select any smoke detector as the starting device. - Set the master device to pairing mode:
Press the side button four times in quick succession. - Pair the second device:
Briefly press the button on the new device twice within 30 seconds. - Wait for confirmation:
Both devices emit an acoustic signal and an LED confirmation – the pairing is successful. - Pair additional devices:
Repeat steps 2-4 for each additional device in the group.
Note: A group consists of a master and several linked detectors. The maximum number of directly connectable devices depends on the respective model (e.g. up to 24 for XS01-M).

Safety and suitability for everyday use
In my house, I have both the app-controlled version with a base station and a second group linked exclusively via HF radio – for the outside area and the basement, for example. The system works reliably, even through solid walls. Even when the WLAN is switched off, the wirelessly networked smoke detectors remain active and automatically trigger all other devices in the group in the event of an alarm.
Especially in multi-storey buildings, old buildings with thick walls or in outbuildings without WLAN, HF coupling is a reliable, inexpensive and fail-safe alternative.

Video: X-Sense Link+ wireless smoke detector test – installation, app control & practical example
The installation of the X-Sense Link+ system with wirelessly networked smoke and CO detectors, the app setup and the practical test in my multi-storey villa are documented in a detailed video on my YouTube channel. Mounting smoke detectors – classic mounting vs. magnetic plates
The smoke detectors can be installed in two ways: the classic way with screws and plugs or alternatively with self-adhesive magnetic plates. Both variants are justified, but differ in terms of cost, flexibility and handling.
Classic fastening with screws and plugs
The X-Sense smoke detectors are supplied with mounting screws and suitable wall plugs. Installation is carried out by screwing the base plate to the ceiling, onto which the smoke detector is then attached. This method is particularly safe, permanently stable and is recommended in new buildings or where the detector position is permanently planned.
Mounting with magnetic plates – flexible and without drilling
For those who don’t want to drill holes in the ceiling or want maximum flexibility, self-adhesive magnetic plates are the ideal solution. These consist of two parts: A metal plate is glued to the ceiling, the counterpart is attached to the smoke detector. The detector can then be attached using a magnetic contact and removed again at any time.
Advantages of magnetic disk mounting:
- No need to drill: Ideal for rented apartments, old buildings with sensitive ceilings or when a drill is not available.
- Quick installation: Fastening is done in just a few seconds – without any tools.
- Easy maintenance: The detector can be easily removed and reattached for battery replacement or function testing.
- Flexibility when relocating: If the detector needs to be moved to a different position at a later date, it can be relocated effortlessly.
Note on liability:
The adhesive surfaces of the magnetic plates should be attached to clean, grease-free surfaces. Adhesion may be limited in areas with high humidity (e.g. bathrooms) or textured ceilings. A screw connection may be the safer choice here.
In my test, magnet mounting proved particularly effective in renovated living areas – quick, residue-free and easy to maintain. For cellars, workshops or outdoor areas with temperature fluctuations, I still rely on classic screw fittings.

Test: How reliable are the wireless smoke alarms?
The test examined how reliably the X-Sense Link+ system reacts to smoke development and how well the alarm works across several floors – both when using the base station with a Wi-Fi connection and with pure RF coupling without an app and internet. As both coupling methods cannot be actively used at the same time, two separate test series were carried out.
Test series 1: Smoke alarm via WLAN + base station
First, several smoke detectors were installed in the various basement rooms and connected to the base station via WLAN. To simulate a fire, a smoking candle was lit directly under a smoke detector to trigger controlled smoke development. Alternatively, special test sprays approved for this purpose can also be used.
The affected detector reliably detected the smoke from the incense candle with a slight delay and triggered the alarm immediately. The other two smoke detectors in the basement were also activated almost simultaneously – thanks to the wireless networking via the base station. In addition, the base station reported with a clear voice alarm (“smoke alarm”) and a clearly audible signal tone. The alarm was unmistakable in the entire basement area.
The alarm was then silenced centrally via the app. All three detectors and the base station were immediately silenced – but the system remained active. The triggering detector was clearly identified in the app and automatically documented in the event log. The system is automatically reactivated after the prescribed waiting time of 9 minutes.

Test series 2: Alarm transmission via HF radio (without base station)
In a second run, the same scenario was carried out with a separately coupled set of smoke detectors that were not connected to the base station, but communicated with each other exclusively via the HF radio network. Pairing was previously done manually using the buttons on the devices.
A smoke detector on an upper floor was activated with a test spray. The forwarding of the alarm also worked reliably in this configuration: All wirelessly connected smoke detectors responded immediately and also sounded the alarm – even though no app, no Wi-Fi and no cloud connection was used.
Conclusion on the test
Both variants – the app-supported connection via WLAN and the HF wireless network without the Internet – worked reliably in the test. The HF-coupled smoke detectors are a useful addition or alternative in areas without stable WLAN coverage, such as in the attic, in outdoor areas or in the workshop basement. The base station, on the other hand, offers the advantage of central alarm control, voice output, app notification and a detailed event log.
The coupling type must be selected before commissioning, as simultaneous use of app integration and HF radio group is not possible.

Tips on the correct use and maintenance of smoke detectors
For smoke detectors to work reliably, correct positioning is just as important as regular maintenance. Smoke detectors should always be installed on the ceiling – preferably in the middle of the room, as smoke initially collects under the ceiling. In apartments and detached houses, it is advisable to install devices in bedrooms, children’s rooms and corridors that serve as escape routes. Smoke detectors are also useful in living rooms, studies and attics. The use of combination detectors with CO sensors is recommended in cellars with heating technology or workshops where there is a CO hazard.
Maintenance includes checking the detectors at least once a month using the test button. Some models, such as those from X-Sense, also offer an app-based status display. The battery should be checked regularly and replaced if necessary – generally every 5 years at the latest if the batteries are long-term batteries. Visual inspections for dirt or cobwebs are also useful, as these can impair the sensor system. Dust can be carefully removed with a vacuum cleaner or a soft brush.
Even if smoke alarms are connected via radio or app, they should be tested and maintained regularly as a safety device – ideally as part of a fixed maintenance schedule, e.g. every four weeks. This ensures functional safety even in an emergency.
Summary: Wireless smoke detectors in the test – safety for the whole house
In my test, I show how the X-Sense Link+ system with wirelessly networked smoke detectors and CO detectors performs in an old multi-storey building. Particularly in houses with solid masonry and several floors, effective fire protection using conventional smoke detectors is often no longer sufficient. The tested system combines HF wireless networking and app control via a base station. This means that in the event of an alarm, a comprehensive warning can be implemented throughout the entire house – regardless of the room in which smoke or carbon monoxide occurs.
I describe the differences between WLAN-based systems with an app and the HF coupling that can only be used offline, carry out two separate test series and explain how the installation works in a practical way. The app offers additional functions such as real-time CO display, muting, logs and notifications. Alternatively, the system can also be set up without the Internet – ideal for the workshop, cellar or garden shed.

- Why are simple smoke detectors often not enough in old buildings?
In houses with thick walls and several floors, the alarm sound of individual detectors is often not audible throughout the house. Radio networking ensures that all devices are alerted simultaneously in the event of an emergency. - What is the difference between a normal smoke detector and a radio-networked one?
