Choosing the right materials played a decisive role in the construction of my garden kitchen. This article is about why stainless steel was the best choice for the built-in furniture, how the installation went and what experiences were made after several years of use.
From planning and installation to the benefits and challenges of stainless steel in an outdoor kitchen, this article offers valuable insights for anyone who wants to create a durable and functional garden kitchen.
Open or closed shelves in the outdoor kitchen
The garden kitchen is located directly in front of the pool terrace in the middle of the garden. The solid walls and sturdy roof offer reliable protection from rain and snow. However, the kitchen is not airtight, and wind and weather naturally have free access here.
Dust, leaves and other dirt particles enter the area unhindered. In addition, animals cannot be avoided in an outdoor kitchen. Insects such as wasps, flies and spiders have been frequent visitors, but birds, foxes and martens have also kept us company in the past.
So it was important to me to keep the kitchen utensils and, above all, the food, spices and drinks safe. An open storage system was therefore ruled out very early on and we opted for lockable doors.
Why stainless steel? The advantages in outdoor areas
The choice quickly fell on a stainless steel design. But why exactly stainless steel?
Stainless steel furniture offers numerous advantages in the outdoor area of a garden kitchen, which are particularly noticeable in terms of hygiene and durability.
Firstly, stainless steel is an extremely resistant material that can easily withstand extreme weather conditions. It is rust-free and corrosion-resistant, which means that it will not be damaged by rain or snow.
These properties make stainless steel furniture a long-term investment that will retain its functionality and appearance for years to come.
Another decisive advantage of stainless steel is its hygienic surface. Stainless steel is non-porous, making it difficult for dirt, bacteria and other impurities to adhere.
This makes cleaning much easier and ensures that the kitchen always remains clean – an essential aspect when it comes to storing food safely and hygienically.
The robust material also offers protection from animals, which can often be a problem in an outdoor kitchen. Closed shelves made of stainless steel prevent animals such as birds or rodents from reaching food or building nests.
Finally, the stainless steel in my garden kitchen also created an aesthetic contrast to the half-timbered roof and the solid stone walls, giving the overall look a modern yet functional touch.
Planning and selecting BBQ furniture
Planning my garden kitchen began with choosing the right BBQ furniture. In addition to doors, which I wanted to install directly in front of the access to my Napoleon PHANTOM P500, I needed various drawers for storing cutlery or barbecue accessories. Suitable doors also had to be fitted for the smaller built-in niches. Built-in cupboards for the gas cylinder and waste garbage can were also essential.
The choice on the Internet was overwhelming, especially in the professional catering sector. However, perfect quality, a beautiful design and sophisticated functions came at a price. Several hundred euros for a single built-in door would have clearly exceeded my budget.
After some research, I found what I was looking for among foreign suppliers.
In my case, I finally opted for stainless steel furniture from VEVOR, which impressed both with its robustness and the many positive reviews.

Installation of stainless steel furniture
Once the planning was complete, I ordered two drawer systems, two double doors, two single doors and a small door for the diagonal wall next to the washbasin. I initially had to do without the drawer system with integrated waste garbage can, as this was not available for the time being.
The parcels arrived a good week later. The built-in furniture and doors were very well packaged and showed no signs of damage or defects. All the accessories, such as the screws and door handles, were also present.
Only the small sticker with the VEVOR logo on two of the doors bothered me a little, as it was very difficult to remove.
First, I fitted the door handles so that I had better access to the drawers. The installation could then begin. For the installation, I first positioned the drawers and doors in the right places and optimized the position until I was satisfied.
I always had to make sure that the stainless steel furniture was in the area between the brick walls of the niches behind it. I then marked the cut-outs on the OSB boards.
Challenge: Different installation heights
When placing the furniture, I came up against the problem of the different installation heights of the doors and drawers. To create a visually appealing image, I set a height of 10 centimeters above the floor as a uniform starting point for all built-in furniture.
An alternative would have been to place the furniture at different heights to meet the respective requirements for storage space and functionality. However, this would have led to an unbalanced overall picture, which I wanted to avoid at all costs.
Another option would have been to install an additional facing to conceal the height differences. In the end, however, I opted for the uniform alignment as this created a more harmonious overall look.
I sawed out the cut-outs cleanly with my Makita circular handsaw, although I had to finish the corners with my Festool jigsaw.
Stabilization of the drawer systems
To better stabilize the drawer systems and support the weight, I placed gas concrete blocks under the built-in furniture that I had left over from the brickwork.
The drawers are now balanced on the bricks so that the weight is absorbed by the bricks and not just held by the OSB panel at the front. This solution ensured that the cabinets remained stable and secure in place even when fully loaded.
After the furniture had been placed in the opening, aligned and screwed directly to the OSB boards through the predefined drill holes, I realized afterwards that my precise, millimetre-accurate work would not have been necessary at all.
As the frames of the doors and drawers had a protrusion from the fixing holes or the installation openings, small inaccuracies were simply concealed. I only had to be extremely precise with the small door at the washbasin, which had no overhang, so that you couldn’t see the opening in the wall next to the door later on.

Experience after a few years
With the construction of the pedestal, which I described in the article Building your own garden kitchen – worktop and jamb, I was finally able to get started and make the garden kitchen ready for use by installing the doors and drawers.
I have built storage systems behind the doors, and the drawers are also well filled. Everything is easily accessible and yet protected from prying eyes and unauthorized access.
The look of the stainless steel surfaces has proven its worth, and with the OSB boards painted with dark blue boat paint, the garden kitchen looks really great. I would build it the same way again today.
The stainless steel doors and drawers have proven to be very durable. To date, three years after installation, the significantly lower price has not produced any nasty surprises.
There are no rust spots or door handles that have fallen off. Only the pull-out rails of the triple drawer system are a little stiff. However, as these rails are interchangeable, this small defect is not really a disadvantage for me.
Challenge: Animal visitors
Unfortunately, cleaning is not quite as easy as we had hoped. The stainless steel surface is smooth and is generally very easy to clean hygienically, but you can see every fingerprint on the shiny surface. Greasy fingers cannot really be avoided, especially when grilling, and the cleaning effort is therefore higher.
Another unexpected problem are the cats from the neighborhood, who regularly pee on the stainless steel doors in the garden kitchen or leave their scents there.
Cats and other animals are attracted to the metallic surfaces because they hold the smell of previously left scent marks particularly well. For the animals, this is an invitation to place their own scent there to mark their territory.
Possible solutions: What can be done about it?
Incidentally, there are several approaches to solving the problem.
One option is to regularly treat the doors with a strong-smelling cleaning agent or a special odour neutralizer, which covers the scent marks and thus prevents the animals from marking the surface again.
Motion-activated animal repellents that emit a sound or water jet could also be used to keep cats away from the garden kitchen.
Another option is to cover the doors with a cover or protective film that does not absorb the odor as much and makes cleaning easier. These films are easy to replace and can also help to protect the stainless steel surface from further scratches or damage.
Despite these minor challenges, I am very happy with my decision to use stainless steel furniture. The kitchen still looks great years later and fulfills its purpose.

When building my garden kitchen, I was faced with the choice between open and closed shelves. Due to the effects of the weather and unwanted animal visitors, I opted for closed built-in furniture made of stainless steel.
Stainless steel proved to be the ideal choice for the outdoor kitchen, as it is hard-wearing, easy to clean and hygienic. For the built-in furniture, I chose products from VEVOR that are robust, weatherproof and aesthetically pleasing.
