Self-cleaning litter boxes promise less effort, better hygiene and much more pleasant use in everyday life. Many cat owners are increasingly focusing on automatic solutions, especially if they have several cats or little time. With the MOVA MeowgicPod LR10 Prime, I tested a new litter tray in everyday use for several weeks – including set-up, app setup, cleaning cycles and use by two cats. This article is about my experience with a self-cleaning litter box that does many things differently to conventional litter boxes.

Self-cleaning litter trays – development and market overview
Self-cleaning litter trays are not a completely new idea. Brands such as PetSafe and ScoopFree launched automatic cleaning systems onto the market at an early stage. For a long time, the focus was on comparatively simple mechanisms in which lumps or solid residues were automatically pushed into a collection container after using the toilet. Although these systems offered a certain amount of relief in everyday life, they usually worked without sensors, without an app connection and with limited adaptation to the cat’s individual usage behavior.
Modern self-cleaning litter boxes go much further. They rely on precise sensor technology, automatic cleaning cycles, intelligent safety mechanisms and an app-controlled control system. This means that cleaning, time delays and additional functions of the self-cleaning litter box can be flexibly adapted to the cat’s behavior. Such systems are becoming increasingly important, particularly in multi-cat households, as conventional litter trays quickly reach their limits here – both in terms of hygiene and odor control and cleaning effort.

First impressions of the new litter tray
The design of the self-cleaning litter box is modern, clearly structured and of a much higher quality than many conventional litter boxes. With the MeowgicPod LR10 Prime, MOVA has deliberately opted for a minimalist, functional design language that blends unobtrusively into modern living spaces. The combination of soft curves, clear lines and a closed basic shape conveys a technically clean impression that is also suitable for living spaces.
The central element is the semi-open drum construction. It creates a spacious interior that offers cats plenty of room to turn, scratch and burrow without feeling cramped. This point is particularly important for larger cats or several animals, as a comfortable entrance and sufficient freedom of movement significantly improve acceptance behavior. The open front also reduces inhibitions and provides a good overview of the interior.
The design is also clearly thought out in functional terms. The drum is made from a single piece and is neatly sealed, reliably preventing cat litter or liquids from escaping. Transitions, edges and surfaces are designed so that as little dirt as possible can accumulate – a clear advantage in terms of hygiene and cleaning. Overall, the workmanship makes a very solid impression. All components fit together perfectly, nothing seems rickety or unstable. The technical specifications of the MOVA MeowgicPod LR10 Prime show that it is not a simple automatic litter box, but a well thought-out system that is specifically designed for suitability for everyday use, safety and comfort.
Automatic litter box with drum system
The rotating drum system forms the centerpiece. In contrast to simple pusher or rake solutions, this design enables a uniform and controlled movement of the contents. During the cleaning process, the cat litter is passed through an integrated sieve so that clumps are reliably separated from the clean litter. This principle ensures consistent cleaning quality and significantly reduces manual intervention.
Generous interior volume of approx. 110 liters
With an internal volume of around 110 liters, the LR10 Prime is a particularly spacious self-cleaning litter box. The large interior space allows cats to turn around comfortably, scratch and act out their natural behavior. This improves acceptance considerably, especially with larger animals or several cats, and reduces stressful situations when going to the toilet.
Spreading chamber with a capacity of approx. 6 liters
The integrated litter chamber holds around 6 liters of cat litter. This quantity ensures that sufficient litter is available over a longer period of time without the need for frequent refilling. At the same time, the weight of the drum remains balanced, which supports an even cleaning cycle.
Waste garbage can with approx. 11 liters
The waste garbage can is designed for a volume of around 11 liters. In practice, depending on the number of cats, this capacity is sufficient for up to two weeks of operation without emptying. This significantly reduces maintenance costs and makes the system particularly interesting for multi-cat households or longer absences.
Automatic cleaning with sieve
Automatic cleaning is completely automatic via the sieve system. After the cat leaves, the cleaning process starts – with a time delay or immediately. Clumps are reliably separated and transported to the waste garbage can, while clean litter remains in the drum. This means that the litter tray remains constantly usable without the need for manual intervention after each visit to the toilet.
App-controlled control
It is controlled entirely via app. Cleaning modes, time delays, notifications and additional functions can be configured. The app also makes it possible to monitor usage data, weight trends and system status, allowing the litter tray to be flexibly adapted to your own daily routine.
WLAN connection (2.4 GHz)
The Wi-Fi connection ensures stable communication between the device and the app. The use of the 2.4 GHz band increases the range and compatibility with common home networks, which is particularly advantageous for placement in adjoining rooms or corridors.
12-fold safety system
A central element of the technology is the 12-fold safety system. Several weight sensors, infrared sensors and motion detection permanently monitor the condition of the drum. As soon as a cat approaches or the system detects an irregularity, the cleaning process stops immediately. This ensures a high level of safety, even for curious or very active cats.
Noise development in everyday life
The motor operates at a volume of around 30 dB and is therefore barely perceptible in a normal living environment. The fan is measured at around 53 dB, but remains active for a limited time. Overall, the system is pleasantly quiet and is also suitable for open-plan living areas or adjoining bedrooms.

Setting up & commissioning the automatic litter box
Assembly without tools
The design of the new litter box is deliberately kept simple and completely tool-free. All components are designed in such a way that they are plugged in and connected to each other with a perfect fit. First, the side panels and the rear panel are placed on the base platform, followed by the entry pedal at the front. The drum is then inserted from above and snaps neatly into the guide provided.
One advantage of this design is the removable drum. It can be removed in a few simple steps, which not only makes it easier to set up, but also makes cleaning the litter tray much easier later on. Screws, clamps or special tools are not required at any time, so assembly is completed within a few minutes.
App setup and connection
After the mechanical setup, commissioning is carried out via the app. First, the corresponding app is downloaded to the smartphone from the App Store or Play Store. After starting the app, a customer account is created or an existing account is used. This step is necessary to permanently link the device to the app and to be able to use all functions.
The next step is to add the litter tray to the app. To do this, activate Bluetooth on the smartphone and start the device search via the plus symbol or the menu item “Add new device”. The QR code attached to the litter box is scanned and the model is automatically recognized.
The connection to the home WLAN is then established. The automatic litter box uses the 2.4 GHz frequency band, which enables a stable connection and a long range. After entering the Wi-Fi data, the device automatically connects to the network and is registered in the app.
After a few minutes, the setup is complete. The smart toilet now appears on the home screen of the app and can be fully controlled. From this point on, all functions such as cleaning modes, time delays, notifications and statistics are available.

How the self-cleaning litter boxes work
The central element of the self-cleaning litter box is the rotating drum with integrated sieve. After going to the toilet, the system uses weight sensors and motion detection to recognize that the cat has left the interior. Depending on the selected mode, the cleaning process then starts automatically or with a time delay.
During cleaning, the drum moves in a controlled manner and guides the cat litter evenly over the integrated sieve. Clumps caused by clumping cat litter remain on the sieve, while clean litter falls back into the drum through the openings. This mechanical separation process ensures that only the excrement and contaminated clumps are removed from the system, while usable litter remains in the cycle.
In the next step, the separated lumps are transported to the collection container. The closed drum guide means that neither litter nor residue can escape uncontrolled. The collection container is positioned in such a way that the lumps are reliably collected without coming into contact with the drum or the side walls again. This not only contributes to cleanliness, but also reduces deposits in the interior.
A special feature is the integrated diarrhea mode. In this mode, the trommel performs several lateral swivel movements before the actual sieving process. This ensures that the cat litter is distributed around soft droppings and completely enclosed. Only then does the actual separation process start via the sieve. This additional movement improves the stability of the lumps, increases the separation efficiency during screening and significantly reduces lubrication surfaces on the inner walls of the drum.
The automatic cleaning function can be flexibly adjusted. In addition to immediate cleaning, the start can be delayed so as not to disturb sensitive or curious cats. It is also possible to completely deactivate automatic cleaning in do-not-disturb mode. During this period, the drum remains inactive and the cleaning process is only continued after the defined rest phase has expired.
The combination of controlled drum movement, mechanical separation via the sieve and customizable cleaning modes creates a cleaning system that is both reliable and cat-friendly and significantly reduces the amount of manual cleaning required.

Cleaning, cat litter & cleaning cycles
Which litter works?
The function of the self-cleaning litter box is based on a mechanical separation principle using an integrated sieve. Clumping cat litter is essential for this system to work reliably. Only when stable clumps form on contact with liquid can excrement be cleanly separated from the rest of the litter.
Clumping litter combines with urine or feces to form solid units that retain their shape during the cleaning process. These lumps remain on the screen surface as they pass through the screen and are transported directly into the waste container. Clean, unused litter, on the other hand, falls back into the drum through the sieve openings and can be reused.
Non-clumping litter types are unsuitable for this system. Materials such as wood pellets, silicate litter or other non-clumping substrates disintegrate on contact with moisture or remain too fine. This means that they cannot be reliably retained by the sieve. In practice, this would result in contaminated litter remaining in the system or the cleaning process not working properly. For this reason, only clumping cat litter is recommended, ideally with a uniform grain size and good binding properties.
Cleaning modes and their benefits
The self-cleaning litter tray offers several cleaning modes to adapt flexibly to different everyday situations.
Automatic cleaning
In this mode, the cleaning process starts automatically after each visit to the toilet. As soon as the system detects that the cat has left the interior, immediate or delayed cleaning begins – depending on the setting. This mode is particularly suitable for daily use, as the litter tray is kept permanently clean without manual intervention.
Planned cleaning
With scheduled cleaning, the cleaning cycle is carried out at fixed times. This mode is useful if certain time windows are preferred, for example during the day or at times when experience shows that cats are less active. This allows operation to be controlled in a targeted manner and adapted to the daily routine.
Manual cleaning
Manual cleaning allows the cleaning process to be triggered specifically via the app. This mode is useful if additional cleaning is required or if the automatic function has been temporarily deactivated. The cleaning process is identical to the automatic cleaning process.
Diarrhea mode
The diarrhea mode is designed for situations in which soft stools occur. In this mode, the trommel performs several lateral swivel movements before the actual sieving process. This ensures that the cat litter is distributed around the droppings and completely enclosed. The actual separation process then takes place via the sieve. The functionality and technical background of this mode have already been described in more detail in the previous section. In practice, this drain reduces lubrication surfaces on the inner walls and significantly improves separation.
Thanks to the combination of suitable cat litter and flexibly selectable cleaning modes, the cleaning cycle can be specifically adapted to individual everyday requirements without impairing the basic functionality of the system.

App functions & control
The app is a central component of the overall system and takes over complete control of the self-cleaning litter box. It is clearly structured and logically divided into status display, control functions, statistics and device settings. Manual intervention on the device itself is hardly necessary in everyday life.
Overview & device status
The current status of the litter tray is displayed on the home screen of the app. This includes information on whether the appliance is ready for operation, is currently in a cleaning process or is paused. In addition, basic functions such as immediate cleaning or manual emptying can be triggered directly from here.
Status messages for litter, waste garbage can and odour neutralization are also visible. The fill level of the litter tray is monitored and reported via push notifications if required.
Recordings & statistics functions
A central area of the app are the records and statistics. All toilet visits are recorded here and displayed chronologically. The app shows how often the litter tray has been used, at what times the visits take place and how long they last.
Thanks to the integrated weight detection, toilet visits can be assigned to individual cats. This provides a long-term overview of usage behavior and weight development. Changes can be detected at an early stage, which can be particularly helpful if there are several cats or health problems.
In addition to daily overviews, weekly and monthly statistics are also available, which make trends in behavior visible.
Control of the cleaning modes
All cleaning modes can be configured via the app. These include automatic cleaning after using the toilet, scheduled cleaning times and manual cleaning at the touch of a button. In addition, special modes such as diarrhea mode or do-not-disturb mode can be activated.
In do-not-disturb mode, the drum remains completely inactive for defined periods of time. This is particularly useful for night-time operation or for installation in quiet living areas. At the end of the rest period, the litter box automatically resumes the cleaning process.
Odor control & air purification
The app also allows you to control the odor control. The intensity and triggering of deodorization, i.e. odour neutralization, can be adjusted here. The status of the deodorizing liquid and the activated charcoal filter is monitored so that a low level is indicated in good time. It is important that the litter box remains technically functional even without the liquid. This function has significantly reduced the typical odor of a litter box.
Notifications & alerts
Push notifications inform you of important events, such as completed cleaning cycles, a full waste garbage can or low litter or filter levels. Unusual usage profiles or deviations in the cat’s behavior can also be reported. All notifications can be activated or deactivated individually.
Device release & multi-user operation
The app supports sharing the device with multiple users. This means that other people can have access to the litter tray, such as family members or caregivers. This is controlled via separate accounts without having to pass on the main account.
Further settings & system functions
The app also provides access to firmware updates, general system settings and integrated help areas. Operating instructions, cleaning instructions and help for beginners can be called up directly in the app. This keeps the litter box software up to date and allows it to be adapted to new functions in the long term.
Overall, the app is a useful addition to the automatic litter box and turns the litter box into a networked system that can be flexibly adapted to everyday life and significantly reduces manual effort.
Maintenance, waste garbage cans & consumables
Overall, maintenance of the self-cleaning litter box is straightforward and clearly structured. Many of the necessary to-dos are monitored by integrated sensors and communicated transparently via the app, largely eliminating the need for regular checks in everyday life.
Waste garbage cans & emptying
The waste garbage can holds around 11 liters and is designed to be used for up to 15 days. In practice, the actual running time depends heavily on the number of cats and their usage behavior. With our two cats, we effectively get by for about a week before the app reports the change of waste garbage can for the first time. This notification is sent reliably via push notification to prevent overfilling.
Commercially available bin liners can be used for the waste garbage can, special bags are not absolutely necessary. If necessary (e.g. for a complete clean), the container can be emptied completely via the app or directly on the appliance, with the drum conveying the contents directly into the collection container. After removal, the new bag is inserted, the container is replaced and the litter is filled up to the mark – a process that only takes a few minutes.
Consumables & filters
To support odor control, an activated charcoal filter is installed, the status of which is also monitored via the app. A corresponding message appears as soon as a change is appropriate. The same applies to the deodorizing liquid, if used. Important: Even when the liquid is empty, the litter box remains technically fully functional.
The app provides early notification of low fill levels so that maintenance work can be planned and does not become necessary unexpectedly.
Drum & manual cleaning
The drum can be completely removed for thorough cleaning. This step is particularly useful if the litter tray has been used intensively over a long period of time or if additional hygienic cleaning is required. The drum can be rinsed out with water and the edges and transitions are designed so that only a small amount of dirt is trapped. After drying, it is reinserted and is immediately ready for use.
Sensors & maintenance instructions
The litter box uses several sensors to monitor the maintenance status. Weight sensors, position sensors and status queries detect, among other things, whether the waste garbage can is inserted correctly, whether a cleaning process has been completed and whether maintenance is required. If irregularities occur, the app informs you immediately via push notification.
This combination of sensor technology and app instructions significantly reduces manual maintenance work. Instead of fixed maintenance intervals, care is carried out in a needs-oriented and traceable manner, which makes everyday life with the self-cleaning litter box noticeably easier.
