What are the running costs? What problems arise when installing the pool in the basement? I will explore all these questions in the following article.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/commaik.de\/2020\/12\/mspa-alpine-delight-aufblasbarer-whirlpool-fuer-die-sauna\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">I have written a first article on the construction of the whirlpool here.<\/a> <!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<h4><\/h4>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Technical_data_Mspa_Alpine\"><\/span>Technical data Mspa Alpine<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<p>I decided to buy the Mspa Tekapo, a hot tub designed for four people.<\/p>\n<p>This model has a square shape with a side length of 158 cm and a height of 68 cm. The inside dimensions are slightly smaller at 118 cm x 118 cm with a filling height of approx. 45 cm.<\/p>\n<p>The pool holds a total of 650 liters of water.<\/p>\n<p>I found its compact design particularly practical. The pump, heater and bubble technology are integrated directly into one of the side walls, which also means that no external filters are required.<\/p>\n<p>The water is sucked in through an opening on the inside, pumped through the heating element and fed back into the pool through another opening. The cartridge filter is fitted in front of this inlet opening.<\/p>\n<p>Another advantage of the Mspa Tekapo is the safe power supply via a 220V Schuko plug, which has its own circuit breaker. This device significantly minimizes the risk of short circuits in the event of contact with water.<\/p>\n<p>Setting up the pool is quick and easy as it has an integrated inflation function. Despite thorough showering before use, there were more dirt particles in the water than when using it in the cellar.<\/p>\n<p>This should not be underestimated when assessing water quality.<\/p>\n<p>The tarpaulin proved to be reliable protection for the whirlpool, which was clearly evident from the deposits on the tarpaulin. However, the tarpaulin was sagging in the middle, allowing dirt and rainwater to collect there.<\/p>\n<p>Removing the tarpaulin without tipping the dirty water into the pool proved to be a challenge and required at least two people. However, this would not be a problem under an additional roof.<\/p>\n<p>In summer 2021, the outdoor temperatures were rather moderate, with highs of around 30\u00b0C, which is well below the target temperature of 38\u00b0C for the pool water.<\/p>\n<p>Surprisingly, the black pool did not heat up noticeably, even though it was in the sun. The pool holds 650 liters of water which must be cleaned and heated. Of course, the bubble function of the spa is mandatory. All this consumes electricity.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>As already written above, power is supplied via a 220V Schuko plug with integrated short-circuit protection. With a max. Power consumption of about 2.1 &#8211; 2.2 kW (pump + heater + spa at the same time), the pool hangs on a circuit with 16A fuse and 30mA circuit breaker (FI).<\/p>\n<p>During the entire use there were no technical problems!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>The performance data of the electrical components read as follows on paper:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Pump (filter operation) &#8211; 35W<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Heating &#8211; 1.5 kW<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\">Spout &#8211; 0.6 kW<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>While heating and bubbling can be switched on and off manually via the wired remote control, the filter operation is de facto always active.<\/p>\n<p>Provided the power is on, the water is pumped through the filter for one hour every 4 hours to maintain water quality.<\/p>\n<p>The heater managed a good 2\u00b0C per hour at a room temperature of about 15\u00b0C. This is in accordance with the technical data sheet, and also takes into account the temperature loss to the environment.<\/p>\n<p>Using a current meter, we were able to measure an average value of 1420 W to 1450 W for the heating function.<\/p>\n<p>The bubble function draws 637 W from the power socket and the filter function consumes 29 W. Overall, the MSpa Alpine Whirlpool is more economical than officially stated.<\/p>\n<p>So how does this affect ongoing operations over a longer period of time? For this purpose, I logged 4 test series. 2 test series in heating mode and 2 test series in standby filter mode.<\/p>\n<p>A 5th test series was to measure the consumption when holding the temperature. Despite the fact that we get our electricity from our own PV system, I assume an electricity price of 0.30 EUR to ensure comparability.<\/p>\n<p>The room temperature was between 10\u00b0C and 12\u00b0C in each case.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>1st test series &#8211; standby\/ filter operation<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>1. 125 h runtime &#8211; total consumption 0.869 kWh &#8211; corresponds to 0.007 kW\/h<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>2. 212 h runtime &#8211; total consumption 1.383 kWh &#8211; corresponds to 0.007 kW\/h<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The pump runs every 4 hours for 1 hour to push the water through the filter. The cost would thus be 5 cents per day or EUR 1.50 per month.<\/p>\n<p>Since a water filling is charged with approx. 4 euros (corresponds to approx. 6 EUR for a cubic meter of tap water) it can be quite more favorable to filter the water further instead of emptying and refilling the pool.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2nd test series &#8211; heating up from 11\u00b0C to 38\u00b0C desired temperature<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>19 h running time &#8211; total consumption 25.861 kWh &#8211; corresponds to 1.361 kW\/h<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>14 h runtime &#8211; total consumption 21.985 kWh &#8211; equivalent to 1.570 kW\/h<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Due to the long heating times, I could not stop the measurement when the 38\u00b0C was reached. Both values therefore also include the consumption values for the filter function and for maintaining the temperature after it has been reached.<\/p>\n<p>In practice, however, this is of secondary importance as I am concerned with the actual costs incurred in the calculation. The cost per heating process is thus between 6 and 8 euros.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>3rd test series &#8211; maintain temperature at 38\u00b0C<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>25 h runtime &#8211; total consumption 7.733 kWh &#8211; corresponds to 0.309 kW\/h<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>At a room temperature of just over 12\u00b0C, the inflatable spa loses about 10\u00b0C per day. Once the pool is heated up to 38\u00b0C, the cost of electricity is about 2.30 EUR per day to maintain the temperature.<\/p>\n<p>Since the heating regulates itself automatically, it can make sense to keep the pool permanently at 38\u00b0C on planned bathing days.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>We used the pool every weekend especially during the winter months. The water was heated high one day before. This price included fresh water, wastewater, rainwater charges and the basic charge. A filling of 650 liters therefore cost me just under EUR 4.<\/p>\n<p>When the pool was installed in the garden, the water became dirty more quickly and more frequent water changes were necessary. When using the pool as an (expensive) paddling pool, a monthly water change seemed sufficient.<\/p>\n<p>For those who wanted to relax in the SPA whirlpool spa and attached importance to clean water, regular water changes were essential. In my experience, the change intervals could be significantly extended by taking a thorough shower before entering the pool.<\/p>\n<p>The use of sunscreen, skin protection products or care oils should be avoided, as the cartridge filter was not able to clean the resulting &#8220;oil film&#8221; on the water surface.<\/p>\n<p>When the bubble function was activated, a coarse and firm foam formed. This was exacerbated if you had previously lathered up with shampoo or shower gel.<\/p>\n<p>The water was primarily cleaned by the cartridge filter, which reliably filtered suspended particles out of the water. However, it was not able to remove dirt from the surface of the water as the suction was too weak for this.<\/p>\n<p>I regularly removed the filter and rinsed it under hot water, but at some point a replacement filter was needed.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the cartridge filter was a coarse sieve in the wall of the inflatable pool, from which I was able to remove some hair during my monthly cleaning.<\/p>\n<p>Looking back, my initial concerns about the design and position of the filter were not confirmed. The filter protruded about 10 cm into the tank and was never stepped on during bathing.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the filter, I used chlorine tablets to treat the water.<\/p>\n<p>Initially, I placed a 200g MultiTab from a large pool in a floating chlorine dosing unit. However, I had to remove the tablet after two days because of the strong chlorine odor.<\/p>\n<p>I therefore switched to 20g MultiTabs, which I also left in the pool at the lowest level of the dosing unit.<\/p>\n<p>The regular circulation of the water distributed the chlorine well and there was no bleaching on the pool, although the dosing unit had a preference for the right-hand corner next to the filter outlet.<\/p>\n<p>When operating the inflatable whirlpool in the basement, I noticed that no further &#8220;swimming pool odors&#8221; occurred in the SPA area with the small 20g tabs. The maximum heat output was specified as 42\u00b0C, which we achieved according to the integrated thermometer.<\/p>\n<p>Various accessories are available to enhance the SPA experience, including headrests, cup holders and special radios. In our rooms, however, we were not dependent on a radio or a cup holder.<\/p>\n<p>I originally planned to use a neck support, but after a few baths I realized that it wasn&#8217;t necessary. There is a drain at the bottom of the pool, which is secured by a simple plug.<\/p>\n<p>The other end of the drain is located under the pool&#8217;s technical wall and is secured with a screw cap that is difficult to access.<\/p>\n<p>Once the cap was removed, an adapter for the Gardena quick connector system could be screwed on to connect a garden hose. It is important to ensure that the coupling is firmly connected to prevent water from flowing past the pool and onto the ground.<\/p>\n<p>I drained the old water through the hose directly into the sewer, with the fixed plug on the inside regularly overlapping the drain and considerably delaying the water drainage. Emptying the last 2 to 3 cm of water proved to be difficult.<\/p>\n<p>In the garden, we raised the pool on the opposite side to lower the water level to less than 1 cm and allow the pool to dry completely. The residual water in the cellar had to be laboriously wiped out.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, I filled it up with fresh water via the hose, although I decided to fill it via the drain nozzle as the hose was already fitted.<\/p>\n<p>One disadvantage was the low water loss when the hose or hose coupling was replaced by the sealing cap, whereby at least the water in the drain pipe ran directly onto the floor.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you should be aware that this pool requires a permanent installation or storage location.
